7-Year-Old Girl Goes Viral Asking Old Navy for Real Pockets

Growing up and getting clothes as a female can at times be frustrating. Not only are things made different, but often times those pockets you see are just for decoration. Kamryn Gardner, a first grader, was assigned to write a persuasive letter for school decided that this would be what she wanted to focus on. She penned a letter to clothing company Old Navy after comparing her jeans to her brothers and finding that his pockets were functional while hers were sewn shut.

“I wrote to them because I would like a place to put my hands and a place to hold my stuff,” Gardner told The Washington Post. “I want my pants to have real pockets like my brother’s pants.”

In her letter to Old Navy, she said:

Kamyrn Gardner’s letter to Old Navy

    “Dear Old Navy,

I do not like that the front pockets of the girls jeans are fake. I want front pockets because I want to put my hands in them. I also would like to put things in them. Would you consider making girls jeans with front pockets that are not fake. Thank you for reading my request.

    Sincerely, Kamryn Gardner, age 7.”

What’s really interesting is not just that Old Navy received the letter but that they answered her as well. Old Navy sent Kamryn four pairs of jeans with actual pockets. In a response card, they also said that they would be looking into solving this problem in their kids clothing going forward.

Her school was also so proud of her they posted on the Facebook page showing her original letter and the response she got from the retailer.

Sometimes all it takes is a voice. Hopefully Kamryn writes more letters like this to other retailers. Because if there is anything we can fix without politics, it’s pockets in girls clothing.
