How to Make a Funtime Foxy Tail from “Five Nights at Freddy’s” for Kids

My daughter who is a huge fan of anything foxes recently stumbled upon “Five Nights at Freddy’s” Funtime Foxy character. Her being who she is decided that my next project as a mom should be making her a Funtime Foxy tail. She’s six and knows exactly what she wants. Her first tail was a double one of Tails aka Miles Prower from Sonic the Hedgehog. So I’ve made a few tails now and it’s not as hard as you might think.

The first tail I made her I hand sewed and stuffed. This one is much more simple and most of the materials you can find on Amazon. I’ll link them in the tutorial so you can have access to everything you need.

    Materials

So the tail I used was just a plain white one that came in a set with ears from Amazon. For the belt I used a slat release buckle and a nylon webbing strap. I also got a bottle of pink rit synthetic fabric dye.

You will also need scissors, a needle and thread, and a soft brush.

    How To Make the Belt:

To start I kind of cheated and used the old tail belt to measure with. I figured she had about another inch to add around so I lined up the nylon webbing strap with it and cut it to the right size.

For yours you can just take the strap and wrap it around your child’s waist and add a few inches more than you need. You can always adjust the size later with the flat buckle which is a must especially if you are making it for a kid because they grow so fast!

You’re going to want to center the nylon strap and sew it on the tail. Now as a disclaimer this tail was supposed to come with its own strap but when I received it was not attached. I’m unsure if it had been ripped off because there was glue where it should have been, but even if you do receive on with one glued on I recommend tearing it off and sewing your own on. Especially since kids play hard and with glue it would probably tear off really easy.

The end of the strap where I cut I used the oven top burner and sealed up the end. If you ever adjusted a belt you know that the ends will fray if left alone. But there’s just enough plastic in the fabric to melt and seal it so just lightly go over the end. You DO NOT need to light it on fire, just caress the end with the tip of the flame.

The size can be adjusted when you sew on the clasp. You just have to run it through the ends and then sew it down to secure them. Keep one or both sides slightly longer if you plan on adjusting the size of it later so that it can be let out.

    Dyeing Instruction

This was much easier than even I anticipated. Though you do need to be really careful of making a mess. I laid out a cutting board and some paper towels so that I could lay my stirring spoon on it instead of the counter.

The instructions on the dye say to heat the water to almost boiling. I just let the hot water run in the sink and then put the burner on to keep the temperature. Then since I wanted the tail to be relatively light at the end I only used about 1/4 of the bottle. It says to use 1/2 for 3 gallons of water but the pot I have is nowhere near that size. And were just doing the tip after all.

Make sure before you dip you use your hand and separate the fur of the tail you don’t want dyed. I was able to do this by just stroking it downward and making a part. It won’t be perfect but it doesn’t need to be. You can also use the brush I mentioned grabbing in the materials if you want to.

Then comes the dipping. I wanted a light color because that’s what I saw in the images my daughter showed me she liked. I literally dipped it for a few seconds, maybe 40 all together. Made sure that the color was taking and then dipped again for good measure. I had a towel on hand to dab off the extra wetness and then hung it up to dry.

    And You’re Done!

Congratulations! That’s it! Now you should have a beautiful Five Nights at Freddy’s Funtime Foxy tail.
