Leonardo DiCaprio’s greatest role may be as a real-life hero; on December 30, while vacationing with girlfriend Camilla Morrone, his boat came to the rescue of a man who had been adrift in the Caribbean Sea after falling from a Club Med ship.
DiCaprio was vacationing in St. Barts and was out on a yacht with friends when they received a distress call about the lost passenger; their boat was the only one in the vicinity and the only one actively searching for the man. The man, a 24-year-old Frenchman, was found an hour before dark just before a massive rainstorm was due to hit. He had been treading water for approximately 11 hours and was severely dehydrated when he was pulled aboard DiCaprio’s boat. The man was given food, water, and clothing before he was transferred to the local Coast Guard.
It is fortunate that the man, whose chances of survival had been considered slim before the rescue, fared better than DiCaprio’s character Jack from Titanic; fans of the movie are still outraged that Jack didn’t share the floating door with Rose and instead drowned before help came.
