DS9 Documentary to Play in Theaters One Day Only

I think at this point it is safe to declare that Deep Space Nine is still the undisputed best Star Trek show. It took a long time for me to admit that fact and that my beloved Next Generation is only second best. While the other shows in the canon provide an inspirational tribute to the best of humanity, DS9 pushes back on everything being flowers and rainbows. What keeps the show from being a grimdark slog is how we follow a group of flawed, disparate people find a way to get along and form a bond that fights against the darkness of the coming Dominion. Part of the reason why it took so long for a lot of people to come to the show is that it doesn’t get nearly the respect it deserves from Paramount. While the original series and next generation have received lavish HD restorations, the only way to watch DS9 is in dvd quality. There also hasn’t been the same amount of retrospectives and behind the scenes documentaries available. A group of dedicated fans changed that with the crowdfunded documentary What We Left Behind. Featuring tons of interviews with the cast and creators of the show, it promises to be a fascinating examination of how important DS9 truly was.

Now comes even better news as What We Left Behind has received a limited theatrical run thanks to the folks at Fathom Entertainment.

The one night only event will allow fans of the show to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the show’s last season together and look back with brand new interviews and footage. Another major perk is that the doc will also feature clips of the show redone in HD to capture a version of the show that has never been seen before. Pre orders go on sale April 12th and will include a limited edition poster along with a ticket. There will also be a featurette after the doc which will be a roundtable discussion with creators Steven Ira Behr and other producers. The event sounds like it will be a great way for long time fans and newbies to commemorate DS9 in a way it has so deeply deserved.

What We Left Behind will be in theaters May 13.
