When they tell you to head inside during a thunder storm take heed of that advice! There’s new footage of a tree being decimated by lightning and it’s quite the sight. Posted to US National Weather Service Green Bay Wisconsin’s Facebook is security camera footage of a tree outside of Wautoma High School in Wautoma, Wisconsin.
The tree lightning strike happened as sophomore and junior students were preparing to take an ACT test. No one was injured in the strike and no school property suffered damage. Just a big burn spot where a tree used to stand.
According to the CDC, your chances of getting struck by lightning are about 1 in 500,000. There are three factors that contribute to your chances of getting hit; regional, seasonal and occupational. Farmers have a higher chance of getting hit due to the machinery and the wide openness of where they work. Odds are they are the tallest thing on the ground if they’re out working.

- Males are five times more likely than females to be struck by lightning. On record around 85% of lightning fatalities are men.
- People aged 15–34 years account for almost half of all lightning strike victims (41%). The majority (89%) of lightning deaths occur among Caucasians.
- About one-third (32%) of lightning injuries occur indoors. So probably go to the innermost part of your home or a place without windows to be safest.
