Apple TV+ just released a trailer for their upcoming “The Mosquito Coast” television show. The seven episode series will focus on Allie Fox, played by Justin Theroux (“The Leftovers“). Fox is an idealist and a brilliant inventor who uproots his whole family and goes on the run with them to Mexico. The U.S. Government is chasing them for mysterious unknown reasons.
“The Mosquito Coast” was first adapted into a movie in 1986 starring Harrison Ford and Helen Mirren. That film is a staple in my household despite being one of the more obscure Ford films.
In the 1986 film, an idealist uproots his family to a remote Caribbean island, away from the consumerism which he perceives to be choking America. He sets about creating a Utopia in the jungle by bringing ice to the natives and uses his genius for making gadgets to enhance their primitive lifestyle. The father played by Harrison Ford also happens to tell his family that the United States was blown up and no longer exists in order to keep them there. It’s an incredible psychological thriller.
“The Mosquito Coast” is based on the 1981 novel of the same name by Paul Theroux. As far as I know, the film was very closely adapted from the book, so this creation from Apple TV+ seems quite different.
Justin Theroux is the nephew of the travel writer and novelist Paul Theroux, which is probably how this got green lit. Knowing there is a personal connection to it makes it all the more intriguing.
Melissa George, Logan Polish, Gabriel Bateman, and Kimberly Elise also star.
