Most AI image tools fall apart in the same two places: they can’t keep a character looking like the same person twice, and they can’t spell. Those are exactly the two things that matter if you’re making a comic page, a D&D party sheet, a con badge or a fake movie poster.
Google’s Nano Banana 2 handles both better than the tools that came before it. It isn’t magic, and there are real limits worth knowing before you commit a weekend to it. But if you make things, it’s worth ten minutes of your attention.
What it is, without the jargon
Nano Banana 2 is Google’s image generation and editing model. Its technical name is Gemini 3.1 Flash Image, and Google launched it on 26 February 2026 as a faster follow-up to Nano Banana Pro.
The easiest way to try it is the Gemini app. Open the tools menu, pick “Create images”, then choose Fast, Thinking or Pro before you type. If you’d rather work in a browser tool built around presets and batch exports instead of a chat window, third-party services like Nano Banana 2 run on the same underlying model with credit-based plans. Those are independent products, not Google ones, so read the credit terms first.
Five things it does well for creators
1. It keeps a character consistent across images. This is the big one. Google’s developer documentation says Nano Banana 2 accepts up to 4 character reference images and up to 10 object references in a single request. Feed it four angles of your OC and you can generate a turnaround, an action pose and a portrait that all read as the same person. Nano Banana Pro goes further at 5 characters, 6 objects and 3 style references, which is the better pick for group shots.
2. It can put readable text on a poster. Text rendering was the running joke of AI art for two years. Nano Banana 2 handles titles, credits blocks and logos far more reliably, and Google specifically calls out multi-language text as an improvement. It is not typesetting software kerning still drifts on long strings but a mock one-sheet with a legible title is now realistic.
3. It exports at sizes you can actually print. Four output tiers: 512px, 1K, 2K and 4K. A 4K export is enough for a poster print rather than a phone wallpaper. Worth knowing: Google Cloud confirmed general availability at 1K and 2K on 28 May 2026, while 4K is still labelled preview. It works, it just isn’t guaranteed.
4. The aspect ratios cover banner-shaped things. Google added 4:1, 1:4, 8:1 and 1:8 alongside the usual set. Those are the shapes you need for a Twitch header, a con table banner, a wide title card or a vertical standee. Previously you’d generate square and crop, losing composition.
5. It knows real things. Nano Banana 2 can ground a generation using Google Search and Google Image Search. Ask for a specific real building, a real car model or a real convention hall and it has a much better shot at getting the details right. The cheaper Lite version does not have this.
Prompt tips that actually change the output
Turn the thinking level up. The model has two modes: “minimal”, which is the default, and “high”. Minimal is fine for a quick variation. For a layout with several characters, a specific camera angle and text, switch to high and accept the extra wait.
Describe the camera, not just the subject. “Low angle, 35mm, shallow depth of field, backlit” moves the result more than another five adjectives about the character’s coat.
Give it references instead of adjectives. Two clean reference photos beat a 200-word description of a face every time. This is the single biggest quality jump available to you.
Edit in passes. Generate the composition first, then upload the result and ask for one change swap the lighting, change the background, add the title. Trying to fix four things in one prompt usually breaks the parts that were already right.
What it costs
If you use the Gemini app, image generation is part of your normal Gemini access and you don’t pay per picture. Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers get an extra option: regenerate any result with Nano Banana Pro from the three-dot menu.
If you use the API, Google publishes flat per-image rates. At standard pricing, Nano Banana 2 costs $0.045 at 512px, $0.067 at 1K, $0.101 at 2K and $0.151 at 4K. Batch requests are half price. Nano Banana Pro is $0.134 at 1K or 2K and $0.24 at 4K. There’s no free tier on the paid API.
In plain terms: a 40-panel comic drafted at 1K costs under three dollars in raw generation. The expensive part is the twelve attempts per panel, not the panel.
Where it falls short
Consumer output carries a watermark. Google applies an invisible SynthID watermark plus a visible marker to images generated in its consumer products. If you need a clean file for a print run or a client, that’s a real problem and generally pushes you toward the paid API.
Four character references is a hard ceiling. If your scene has six named characters who all need to look right, Nano Banana 2 will start blending faces. Pro handles five. Beyond that you’re compositing manually.
It is still bad at doing specific things. Better than 2024, still not reliable. A character holding a particular weapon in a particular grip usually needs several attempts or a manual fix.
Style consistency is weaker than character consistency. Nano Banana 2 has no dedicated style reference slot Pro does, with three. If you’re chasing one house style across 30 images, that gap will annoy you.
And the naming is genuinely confusing. Nano Banana 2, Nano Banana Pro and Nano Banana 2 Lite are three separate models. Pro is not “version 3” ; it’s built on a different base (Gemini 3 Pro Image) and costs roughly twice as much per image.
Verdict
For fan art, character sheets, mock posters, storyboards and reference boards, Nano Banana 2 is the most useful free-to-try option right now, mostly because of reference handling and text. For a finished group illustration with five characters and a fixed house style, spend the extra and use Pro.
Neither replaces an artist. Both are very good at the eight boring versions you make before you know what you actually want.
