Florida Takes OpenAI to Court Over Alleged ChatGPT-Linked Murder & Suicide

Florida has become the first U.S. state to sue OpenAI and CEO Sam Altman. The suit, filed by Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier, alleges that OpenAI knowingly released and promoted ChatGPT. However they did so despite warnings about potential safety risks. ChatGPT in particular says that it’s “Built with Safety in Mind.” So when it can be used for malicious intent that defeats the purpose of that message.

According to the complaint, state officials argue that OpenAI prioritized growth and market rankings over user safety. The lawsuit cites several incidents in which individuals allegedly used ChatGPT before carrying out violent acts. Acts which include the 2025 shooting at Florida State University. As well as several other cases involving self-harm and suicide. Florida claims these incidents demonstrate that the company failed to implement safeguards despite being aware of potential dangers.

ChatGPT “Built With Safety In Mind”?

The state further alleges that OpenAI misrepresented the safety of ChatGPT. Especially when it comes to vulnerable users and minors. Florida accuses the company of deceptive business practices, negligence, product liability violations, and creating a public nuisance. The complaint also seeks to hold Altman personally accountable for decisions related to the product’s deployment and marketing.

OpenAI has rejected the allegations, stating that its models are designed with safety measures and that, in cases referenced by the lawsuit, the system encouraged users to seek professional help or real-world support. The company says it has cooperated with law enforcement investigations and continues to improve safety systems as new risks emerge. Unfortunately even with the encouragement of seeking professional help the user can still chat and delve deeper into issues afterwards. It won’t just stop talking to them.

The lawsuit arrives amid growing legal pressure on OpenAI. In recent months, the company has faced multiple wrongful-death and injury lawsuits. All alleging that ChatGPT contributed to harmful behavior, including suicide and violent crime. Separately, a coalition of state attorneys general has reportedly begun investigating OpenAI’s business practices, safety policies, and treatment of vulnerable users.

Whether Florida succeeds in court could become a landmark test of how much responsibility AI developers bear when their products are allegedly connected to real-world harm. The outcome may influence future regulation of generative AI systems and establish new legal standards for safety, transparency, and accountability in the industry.
