The rights for the New York Times bestseller Playground by Richard Powers have been secured by Warner Bros. Pictures. Plan B, Timothée Chalamet (Dune) and Brian Swardstrom are attached to produce. This is still in pre-production but with these particular names attached it’s likely that Chalamet will star.
Richard Powers’ Playground (2024) is a novel exploring artificial intelligence, environmental decay, and human connection. The book is focused on the Pacific island of Makatea. Following four characters—a tech mogul, a writer, an oceanographer, and a sculptor, their lives converge as they confront the ethical, social, and ecological consequences of building tech-driven floating cities. The story highlights the need to protect the oceans.
So far nothing is announced as far as a writer or director. No time frame is known. We expect to hear more about this project in the coming months. Stay Tuned.
