Famous Filming Locations You Can Actually Visit (and Even Live Near)

There’s a special feeling to being in a place you’ve only previously seen on screen. Filming locations, be they a fantasy epic’s castle or a quiet street from a beloved film, make stories tangible. Many fans have visited these spots on their ‘must-do’ lists, but for some, the pull is even stronger, influencing where they decide to live.

Alnwick Castle: A Real-Life Hogwarts Setting

Alnwick Castle is instantly recognisable to those who watched Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone as the place where Harry took his first flying lesson. Now, you can walk the same grounds as he did, have a broomstick training session and investigate one of the UK’s most impressive historic castles.

Alnwick is special because it’s easy to get to. The town around it is much slower-paced, has a good community spirit and lovely countryside. It’s easy to understand why some visitors don’t just come for the day but move to the area to enjoy the atmosphere year-round.

Portmeirion Village: A Surreal Coastal Escape

If you’ve watched The Prisoner, you’ll know the colourful, dreamlike location of Portmeirion. This Italian-style village is unlike any other in the UK, with its bright buildings, sea views, and winding paths begging to be explored.

You can visit Portmeirion, which is part of a wider area that appeals to those seeking a more peaceful life. North Wales has beautiful scenery, opportunities to be outdoors, and a very strong identity. For those fans who really love the area, staying permanently starts to seem like the obvious thing to do, not just something for the future.

Lacock Village: Stepping Into Period Drama

Lacock Village has appeared in many films and television shows, including Downton Abbey and Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. Film directors love it for creating a feeling of being in a time that doesn’t change, and that’s all down to its old buildings and roads, which have been kept in lovely condition.

When you wander around Lacock, it feels as though you’ve stepped into history, but it’s also a real village with residents, shops and a strong community. That blend of the past and present is what draws people to it. It’s more than just a tourist spot; you can genuinely imagine making a home there.

If you’re a true movie buff, you might even eye up one of these areas to move to. But, moving to these areas isn’t easy, with houses often in high demand and selling extremely quickly, particularly an issue when you need to sell your existing house.

But for fans who are ready to make a big move, if you’re set on a move, over just a visit, there are some options available to help. Setting up alerts on property websites is a good first step to ensure you hear quickly about any new properties or registering your interest with estate agents in these areas. When selling your own house, you could even look into services like we buy any house in order to sell your house fast before losing a potential property.

Exploring options such as this can make it much easier to turn their inspiration into reality without a long wait.

Film locations are about so much more than how filming works; they give fans the opportunity to actually be within the stories they love. Whether for a simple visit or a complete relocation, these places demonstrate how connected film is to the real world. In fact, your perfect location isn’t just about what’s on the screen; it’s the place you ultimately decide to live.
