In 2008, actress Kristen Stewart cemented her place in the pop culture zeitgeist when she starred as Bella Swan in the film adaptation of “Twilight” book series. She’d been in films before, but when she became Bella, that was the role that made her a household name. Since then, Stewart has carved out a career through independent films and a “Charlie’s Angels” remake, landing her directorial debut in 2025. Stewart is keen to direct again, and revisit the franchise that made her famous.
While at the 2026 Palm Beach Film Festival, Stewart was asked about revisiting previous films she worked on, but as a director. The subject of the “Twilight” franchise inevitably came up.
“Imagine if we had a huge budget and a bunch of love and support, I don’t know,” Steward said. “I would love to readapt—yeah, sure, I’ll do the remake. I’m doing it, I’m committed.”
In a classy move, Stewart made sure to praise the previous directors she worked with, never implying they did a poor job. The “love and support’ angle of things may be difficult depending on who she’s looking to get it from. Critics were NOT kind to the series, and neither were most people outside of fans of the novels. Those fans were numerous enough though to make the series a massive box office success.
Is it too soon for a “Twilight” reboot? Does the world even need or want one? In a word, yes. While not a straight remake, “Midnight Sun,” an animated take on the story told from the point of view of Edward, is currently in development for Netflix.
Steward wrote and directed “The Chronology of Water,” based on the novel of the same name by Lidia Yuknavitch. Currently, it’s doing quite well with over 90% on Rotten Tomatoes.
