Is The New Spawn Movie Already Dead?

There are so many reboots, remakes, whatever you want to call them either being made or in development right now, it’s hard to keep track of them all.

Seems like I start a good amount of my articles for Nerdbot with a variation of that sentence. Disney is even rebooting Honey I Shrunk The Kids crying out loud. While I personally believe the line of originality in Hollywood is being walked rather thinly but some stories are definitely worthy of being retold. Stephen King’s It, for a long time was at the top of my list of projects in dire need of a modern facelift, and look what happened.

Now another intellectual property I feel is long overdue to be revamped might be in jeopardy. According to GameSpot.com Todd McFarlane’s new Spawn movie is kinda at a standstill. You’ve probably noticed how there’s been like zero headlines about the project since Jamie Foxx and Jeremy Renner got attached to star. Seriously, crickets.

Well McFarlane did an interview with ComicBook.com where he addressed some of the “hurdles” the Spawn remake were experiencing.

“The money’s sitting on the sidelines ready to go. I just need to get everyone that wants to put in money to shake their heads to the same script. As you can imagine, everyone has a slightly different version of it in their head. You just go and trying to appease a handful of people while not giving in to what it is that I’m trying to do myself. Because if I have to change it too much, I’ll just walk away from it all.”

Money issues, story issues, egos, sounds like an idea for a movie in case this one never gets made. As if shooting a comic book movie on a ten million dollar budget wasn’t a big enough obstacle on its own. You read that right… only ten million dollars. Of course that’s more cash than I’ll ever see but for a Hollywood production, it’s rather, bleak. Foxx and Renner are probably getting paid like fifty bucks each.

It’s amazing how when needed, somebody will drum up financing for the continuation of the Wayne Szalinski saga, and they won’t get Rick Moranis back. But when it comes to actually make a different kind of comic book movie with an already built-in audience, nobody can cut a friggin check? Especially when the original grossed close to 90 million in 90’s dollars. There are times where the film industry makes no sense to me.

Will Spawn rise from the dead again? Fingers crossed the studio figures it out.
