    Version 1.0.0

Overview of the Birds Oracle Deck

The Spiritual Meaning of Birds Oracle Deck represents a notable addition to the world of divination tools, offering a practical approach to connecting with the wisdom of our feathered neighbors. Created by bestselling author Arin Murphy-Hiscock, this deck brings the spiritual significance of birds into a tangible form for those seeking guidance through nature’s messengers.

What’s included in the 2025 edition

At the heart of this oracle set are 50 carefully curated cards featuring birds you’re likely to encounter in everyday settings. Unlike more exotic-focused decks, Murphy-Hiscock has deliberately chosen to highlight birds common to North American backyards and neighborhoods, making this deck particularly accessible for daily practice.

The set includes a comprehensive informational booklet that serves as your guide to working with the cards 2. This companion text explains card interpretation techniques, details various spread options, and provides insights into the symbolic meaning behind each bird. For instance, the blue jay card reminds users to examine their own communication patterns, while the gull suggests careful discernment about what you accept as truth.

From the energetic hummingbird representing vitality to the nurturing turkey symbolizing abundance and nourishment, each card offers specific guidance related to the natural behaviors and cultural symbolism of the featured bird.

    Design, artwork, and card quality

The 2025 edition employs the “gloriously detailed and vibrant Audubon artwork” to illustrate each card, continuing the artistic tradition from Murphy-Hiscock’s earlier book. This choice of classic ornithological illustrations lends both scientific accuracy and timeless esthetic appeal to the deck.

In terms of physical specifications, the cards come packaged in a sturdy box measuring approximately 5.70 inches wide by 4.10 inches high and 1.50 inches deep. This compact size makes the deck portable yet substantial enough for comfortable handling during readings.

The cards themselves feature clean layouts with each bird prominently displayed, accompanied by its name and key interpretive phrases—a design choice that allows for immediate connection with the bird’s energy without requiring constant reference to the guidebook for basic meanings.

How it differs from the original book

The Oracle Deck represents an evolution from Murphy-Hiscock’s earlier work, “The Hidden Meaning of Birds” (rereleased in 2019, originally published in 2012 as “Birds: A Spiritual Field Guide”). Rather than simply repackaging the book’s content, this deck transforms the conceptual framework into a practical divination tool.

As Murphy-Hiscock explains, “We’ve taken the idea of the book and turned it into an oracle deck to use for divination, seeking guidance, or exploring ideas”. This transformation shifts the focus from purely informational content to an interactive experience that facilitates personal spiritual connection.

Additionally, the deck expands upon the original book with the inclusion of some new bird species not featured in the earlier text. This expansion provides users with a broader range of symbolic meanings and spiritual messages to draw upon in their practice.

Through thoughtful design choices and accessible imagery, the Birds Oracle Deck bridges traditional ornithological knowledge with intuitive spiritual practice, offering both bird enthusiasts and divination practitioners a unique tool for receiving guidance from the natural world.

    Symbolic Themes in the Deck

Throughout history, birds have served as living symbols whose behavior, appearance, and calls form a unique language of spiritual communication. The Spiritual Meaning of Birds Oracle Deck expertly translates this ancient symbolic language into accessible divination tools that connect users with avian wisdom.

Common bird archetypes and their meanings

The deck organizes birds into distinct archetypal categories that reflect their spiritual significance. Essentially, each category represents a different aspect of spiritual guidance:

    • Messengers: Birds like ravens and doves function as liaisons between realms, relaying information from divine sources to the physical world. They serve as communicators of spiritual truths and omens.
    • Guides and Protectors: Eagles and hawks represent high ideals, vision, and protection. Their keen sight symbolizes the ability to see truth from an elevated perspective.
    • Transformative Beings: Carrion birds such as vultures and crows embody transformation, asking us how we handle endings and recycle experiences for future growth.
    • Creative Voices: Songbirds encourage creativity, innovation, and authentic self-expression, prompting us to “sing our own song” with confidence.

The deck also incorporates mythological birds that expand its symbolic range, including the Phoenix, Thunderbird, and Ba-Soul Bird, which seamlessly blend with the natural birds.

How symbolism is represented in the cards

Each card in the Oracle Deck conveys symbolism through multiple elements working in harmony. The bird’s natural behavior forms the foundation of its spiritual meaning—for example, the Ibis card carries the keyword “Wisdom,” reflecting how these birds adapted from wetland habitats to urban environments, demonstrating remarkable intelligence and adaptability.

Color plays a crucial role in interpreting the cards’ messages. Red birds generally signal good fortune, blue ones represent love and joy, while black birds often serve as warnings requiring careful attention. The deck utilizes these color associations to add layers of meaning to each reading.

Furthermore, the cards incorporate traditional ornithomancy (bird divination)—an ancient practice dating back to the Hittites of Anatolia and used by Greeks, Romans, and indigenous cultures worldwide. This historical foundation gives depth to the modern interpretations presented in the deck.

In contrast to other divination tools, this oracle deck places special emphasis on the directional symbolism of birds. A bird flying from right to left suggests easy achievement of goals, while left to right indicates potential obstacles requiring careful consideration.

Examples of birds and their spiritual messages

The Penguin card exemplifies devotion and partnership, drawing on the species’ practice of males offering pebbles to potential mates to build nests together—a powerful symbol of committed relationships.

The Raven card stands apart with its distinctive energy, connecting users to ancestral wisdom and healing generational patterns. As creatures associated with both death and transformation, ravens encourage exploring shadow aspects with courage.

For those seeking creative guidance, the Jay card emphasizes the magic of words and communication, cautioning users to wield verbal power wisely in both external conversations and internal dialogs.

The deck also includes the Ibis, which despite being mockingly called “bin chickens” in Australia, represents profound wisdom through its remarkable adaptation skills—a reminder that wisdom often comes from unexpected sources and challenges.

The cardinal’s appearance signals life-changing events and prompts attention to health matters, while the hummingbird embodies faithfulness, joy, and prosperity—offering distinct guidance for different life circumstances.

Using the Deck for Spiritual Guidance

Working with The Spiritual Meaning of Birds Oracle Deck offers a direct pathway to receive guidance from the natural world. Unlike other divination tools, this deck creates a unique bridge between everyday birds and your spiritual journey, making mystical wisdom accessible through familiar messengers.

    Cleansing your deck

It’s important to make sure the deck recognizes you as the owner. I used a simple 4-element cleanse. There are other ways to do it but I find this more helpful.

    1. Place the cards in the center of your work area
    2. Place salt in the upper left for Earth, Incense in the upper right to represent Air, water (in a vessel) in the lower left, and a candle of your choice of intention in the lower right for the Fire element. I chose green to help with money readings but white is most common.
    3. Say out loud or to yourself, “I cleanse this deck of all unwanted energies,” and light the incense and candle
    • Visualization: Close your eyes and visualize the cards being cleansed of negative energy, replaced with positive, fresh energy.
    • Crystal Cleansing: Use a clear quartz crystal or other cleansing crystal to help purify the cards.
    • Knocking: Tap the deck lightly to remove any lingering energy.
    • Shuffling: Shuffling the cards can help to redistribute any remaining energy.

    4. When to Cleanse:

    • When a new deck arrives
    • After emotional or draining readings
    • Regularly, such as monthly or weekly, depending on how frequently you use the deck

How to perform a basic reading

Initially, create a quiet space where you can focus without distractions. Before shuffling your deck, hold it close to your heart and set a clear intention or question. This crucial step ensures your reading aligns with your highest good. Subsequently, shuffle the cards with purpose, allowing your energy to merge with the deck.

For beginners, a simple three-card spread works effectively:

    1. First card: Represents your past influences
    2. Second card: Illuminates your present situation
    3. Third card: Offers guidance for your future path

Alternatively, try a mind-body-spirit spread where each card reflects these different aspects of your being. Remember, there are no rigid rules—trust what resonates with your intuition.

When interpreting cards, pay attention to your first impressions. Notice which colors, symbols, or parts of the imagery immediately draw your attention, as these intuitive hits often carry significant meaning.

    Why We Love it

This deck is perfect for the seasoned diviner or the beginner because it’s so easy to understand. The cards themselves have the meanings written on them with a more elaborative explanation in the guide book. You can use this with very simple spreads or more complex ones. And best of all, it has beautiful birds!
