Trump Tariffs Halt Sales of Nintendo Switch 2 in the U.S.

On April 2, a Nintendo Switch 2 Direct revealed the eagerly awaited gaming console would be available for pre-order starting April 9th. Just two days later on April 4th, Nintendo announced pre-orders would no longer commence on that date. This significant change is attributed to the Trump Administration’s extensive tariffs imposed on countries that manufacture the consoles. (Japan has been hit with a 24% tariff.)

“Pre-orders for Nintendo Switch 2 in the U.S. will not start April 9, 2025 in order to assess the potential impact of tariffs and evolving market conditions,” a Nintendo representative told CNBC.

Despite this alteration, Nintendo confirmed the release date for the Switch 2, set for June 5th, remains unchanged. Due to the tariffs, it is anticipated the console’s price will increase, and gamers should also prepare for higher prices on games. This includes titles such as the open-world Mario Kart World and Donkey Kong Bananza, which were highlighted in the recent Nintendo Direct but are now overshadowed by the Trump Administration’s frankly outrageous tariffs.

As of now, Nintendo has not provided a new date for Switch 2 pre-orders for the United States.

Nerdbot will continue to monitor this situation as it unfolds. This is serious news for gamers and we’re sorry to report it.
