Skydiving has been on my bucket list for a long time. Something to cross off my list to say I’ve done despite not really being a thrill seeker and a overwhelming preference to not push the limits of human feats. “Space Cowboy” takes everything to a whole new level, thrusting you into a dazzling spectacle of aerial acrobats and cinematography. Even if you may have seen some of this footage before, you’ve never seen anything like this, and you certainly haven’t seen it through the lens and work of Joe Jennings. Jennings is a pioneer of skydiving cinematography, putting a stamp on capturing sports, film, and television in the sky.

“Space Cowboy” examines the life of Jennings as he reflects on a life in the sky, and sets out to perform and film his most daring stunt yet after 30+ years of pushing the limits. It follows all of the ups and downs of his career, and from his own words and experience, sheds light on the highs of literally living the dream while also suffering from tragic loss and severe depression. This is as visually thrilling as it is emotionally effective. Both Marah Strauch and Bryce Leavitt meticulously poured through archival footage to stitch together more than just stunning visuals; they tell a story that is as intriguing as the art created in the sky.

We talk about how both came to the project and how they wanted to craft “Space Cowboy” to be more than just an archival documentary. Both Strauch and Leavitt were a pleasure to talk to, and it made me even more excited for more people to experience it on a giant screen. And that’s the best way to experience the film; on the largest screen you can find so you can feel the art of flying as Jennings journey’s through his life in the air that feel simple awesome, and also grounds it all through his emotional and mental struggles.

“Space Cowboy” is a can’t miss documentary, and Strauch and Leavitt bring us something truly special. It was a joy speaking with both of them, and I can’t wait for more people to check it out!

Rating: 4 out of 5 Stars
