We’ll be the first to admit that we have a great fondness for “Star Trek” around these parts, in all its myriad forms. Animated series “Star Trek: Lower Decks” was cancelled earlier this year. The Paramount+ exclusive series will be airing its final episodes later this year. But come to find out, it’s not quite the end for the crew of the USS Cerritos. The adventures will be continuing in comic form from IDW.
San Diego Comic-Con (SDCC) has played host to a lot of announcements this year, but this go around managed to throw Trekkies a bone. “Star Trek: Lower Decks“ was a welcome addition to the franchise, with its talented voice cast, comedic stories, vibrant characters and animation. Five seasons is a good run for a show, especially in the world of streaming, but it was sad to see it go. HOWEVER, one of the joys of animation is how well it can translate over to comic books, which is exactly what we’ll be getting this November.
IDW Publishing will be handling the comic series with Ryan North as the writer. North previously worked on “The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl” and the “Adventure Time” comics. Notably, this upcoming “Lower Decks” comic will be episodic in nature, with each story being illustrated by a different artist. North is admittedly a big fan of the show and seeks to translate that love into engaging stories. The rotation of different artists will some more fun and inventiveness into the series.
We look forward to seeing how the series will translate over to the comic page but suspect it’ll be a smooth transition. The first issue will be available on November 13th. The 5th and final season of “Star Trek: Lower Decks” is set to hit Paramount+ October 24th, 2024.
