Grammy nominee Adam Lambert and “Mean Girls: The Musical”’s Auli’i Cravalho will be making their Broadway debuts! The duo will be taking on the respective roles of Emcee and Sally Bowles in “Cabaret at the Kit Kat Club.” They are replacing Oscar winner Eddie Redmayne and Gayle Rankin, who have helmed the roles since the play first opened in London’s West End, before moving to New York.

Opening in 1966, “Cabaret” has music by John Kander, lyrics by Fred Ebb, and a book by Joe Masteroff. The play was adapted from the 1951 play “I Am a Camera” by John Van Druten. It is now considered one of the greatest musicals of all time, spawning countless revivals and an Oscar-winning film.

Rebecca Frecknall directs this latest adaptation and adds more of an immersive element than previous versions. Frecknall’s adaptation is performed in the round and has a 90-minute pre-show featuring live performances. There are also several spaces where guests can sip cocktails and walk around the theater watching the performers.

    Lambert & Cravalho’s Thoughts

“Growing up on the musical theater stage, it was always a childhood dream to perform on Broadway,” Lambert said. “With this production of ‘Cabaret,’ it finally felt like the right time to accept an invitation to make my debut. The themes of this show have always resonated with me and given the current sociopolitical climate the world is in, feel eerily timely.”

“I’m thrilled to join the long line of talented women who have taken on the iconic Sally Bowles; most recently, the woman I watched with notebook and pen in hand, the dynamite Gayle Rankin,” says Cravalho. “To join a show with so much history — and such a stellar cast and crew — means it’s quite literally an honor to get my butt kicked each week. Mahalo palena ʻole family, I wouldn’t be making this debut without you.”

“Cabaret at the Kit Kat Club” will return to the August Wilson Theatre in New York on September 2nd. You can grab tickets here.
