In 1985, Richard Donner’s action-packed family comedy “The Goonies” hit theaters. The movie was a huge hit with audiences, becoming a cultural touchstone in the decades that followed. Documentarian Lisa Downs seeks to explore this impact in her film “Life After The Goonies,” which is currently fundraising.

“Life After The Goonies” is a project that seeks to be the definitive documentary celebrating the iconic film. Through interviews with the cast, crew (including the late director), and fans, it will look behind the scenes of the production. Exploring what it took to make the film and to celebrate its incredible and enduring legacy. The best part is Downs has the full support of the cast with her biggest supporter being Sean Astin, who played Mikey.

“Now, having recently spoken to Sean Astin at Liverpool Comic Con, where nervously I proposed the documentary and told him I couldn’t do it without his involvement, to which he replied “why wouldn’t I do it?”…. with the 40th anniversary around the corner, it’s our time….,” reads the Kickstarter.

Astin also made a post on X (formally Twitter) encouraging fans to donate, because Goonies never say die:

I enthusiastically support this Goonies documentary. I hope you all can donate a few bucks so it can get made. I can't wait to participate. I can't wait to see the interviews she's already done…in particular with Richard Donner our Director. I've never seen it. Only a couple…

    “Life After…”

“The Goonies,” is just the latest installment of Downs’ nostalgia-washed “Life After…” series. The series includes 2019’s “Life After Flash” about “Flash Gordon” and 2020’s “Life After the Navigator.” The third installment, “Life After the NeverEnding Story” will be released in May 2024, with plans for several more titles.

If you’d like to support  “Life After The Goonies,” the campaign is running until July 12th. You can check out Downs’ pitch video below:
