James Cameron Says Guillermo del Toro’s “Fantastic Voyage” Remake ‘Coming Very Soon’

The 1966 sci-fi film “Fantastic Voyage,” starring the late Raquel Welch, has left an indelible mark on pop culture. A proposed remake, launched by James Cameron, has been kicking around Hollywood since the late 1990s. Now, it seems we may soon get to see the project come to life.

Recently, Cameron was the guest of honor at La Cinemateque in Paris for a showing of his 1984 classic, “The Terminator.” He was asked during a Q & A session after the screening about the long-gestating remake.

“We’ve been developing it for a number of years, and we plan to go ahead with it very soon,” he said. “Raquel Welch is not available, but we think we can make a pretty good movie.” While Cameron is the one who has been pushing for the film, he will not be directing it.

    Who is Directing?

Cameron wrote the screenplay after completing 1997’s “Titanic.” He seems to still be actively involved in the project despite being up to his neck in “Avatar” sequels. In 2016, filmmaker Guillermo del Toro came on to direct the project.

del Toro has been hinting at possible progress on the remake. Last year he said that his next two films after, the currently in production, “Dr. Frankenstein,” would be the animated “Buried Giant,” and an unnamed live-action film. Given Cameron’s remark, it is now assumed that the latter will be “Fantastic Voyage.”

The 1966 version of “Fantastic Voyage” tells the story of a group of scientists who are put on a submarine, shrunk down to miniature size, and injected into the bloodstream of a colleague. In hopes of removing a blood clot and saving his life.

We will keep you posted on updates about the “Fantastic Voyage” remake as they become available. We hope to see it before the close of this decade.
