A24 Developing Creepypasta Horror Film “The Backrooms”

As creepypastas continue to dominate online horror, of course, we will see more adaptations done via traditional media. We’ve already seen SyFy’s “Channel Zero” which ran for several seasons, each focusing on a different tale. Not to mention the countless films, games, stories, and artwork dedicated to the genre staple Slenderman. Now the latest internet craze “The Backrooms,” is getting its very own adaptation. A24 is teaming up with Kane Parsons, owner of the YouTube channel Kane Pixels, for a feature-length film based on the ominous creepypasta.

While little is known about the film at this time. “The Backrooms” can be traced back to 4chan where an image of a large, eerie, yellow room was first posted in 2018. However, it didn’t start to gain traction until 2019 when it was posted to a thread for images that just “feel off.” The picture of this cavernous, uninhabited room has a repetitive quality that makes it seem like it goes on forever, giving many viewers the creeps.

This soon spiraled into lore about endless maze-like offices that were empty and could only be reached by noclipping out of reality. Meaning, that someone would have to glitch the real world enough to move through a solid object to end up in The Backrooms. And like most popular creepypastas countless fan-made games, art, and short films quickly followed.

Including 16-year-old Parsons’ short film which was released in 2022 and went viral on YouTube, currently sitting at 55.5 million views. His short takes place in 1996 and follows a group of friends recording their shenanigans on a home video camera. Then all of a sudden, the cameraman is noclipped into a strange set of endless rooms. As he ventures through these increasingly ominous rooms he finds a creature who is out for blood.

We’ll keep you posted on updates about A24 and Parsons’ adaptation of “The Backrooms” creepypasta as they become available. You can watch Parsons’ short film below:
