Marvel Studios Phase 5 Shakeup: No More Kang?

Something is happening over at Marvel Studios. Again. Still? In a move that makes a lot of sense for how things are shaping up heading into Phase 5, we may not be seeing Kang again. The character was introduced in “Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania,” and became a main foil for the variants and TVA in “Loki.” It really did seem like the next chapter post-“Endgame” was going all in on the Conqueror.

According to Joanna Robinson, that probably isn’t the case now. The Vanity Fair writer and “MCU: The Reign of Marvel Studios” co-author says the powerhouse studio is likely “moving away” from Kang and actor Jonathan Majors.

While speaking with the House of R podcast, Robinson revealed that Jeff Loveness, who had been tapped to write “Avengers: The Kang Dynasty,” is no longer on the project. She indicated the change is largely due to the directional shift of the 5th “Avengers” film.

We were expecting to see more of Kang in the second season of Disney+ series “Loki,” but that wasn’t the case. It’s possible Majors’ arrest and ongoing legal troubles created a situation the studio did not want, leading to the character’s surprising (and sudden) end.

“Nothing affected our finale,” “Loki” executive producer Kevin Wright told ComicBook. “The story that is on screen is the one that we set out to make, remarkably so. No one was coming down telling us we had to connect or set up anything for the future. It was sort of like, ‘Finish our story that we started.’ As far as where it’s all going, I can’t say. Not because I’m being coy, [but because] we’re not part of those projects.”

Its hard to say if we’ll be seeing Kang again. But as present, it sure looks like this might be the end of He Who Remains in the MCU. Both seasons of “Loki” are currently streaming on Disney+.

Mary Anne Butler (Mab) has been part of the fast-paced world of journalism since she was 15, getting her start in album reviews and live concert coverage for a nationally published (print) music magazine. She eventually transitioned to online media, writing for such sites as UGO/IGN, ComicsOnline, Geek Magazine, Ace of Geeks, Aggressive Comix (where she is still Editor-in-Chief), Bleeding Cool (where she was News Editor), and now Nerdbot as Editor-In-Chief. Over the past 10 years, she’s built a reputation at conventions across the globe as a cosplayer (occasionally), photographer (constantly), panelist and moderator (mostly), and reporter (always). Interviews, reviews, observations, breaking news, and objective reporting are the name of the game for the founder of Harkonnen Knife Fight, a Dune-themed band with an international presence. Though she be but little, she is fierce.
