James Gunn Answers Questions About DC Universe

The WGA strike has reached its conclusion, meaning the floodgates are open for writers waiting in the wings to begin and continue projects. This includes director/filmmaker James Gunn, who is co-head of DC Studios with Peter Saffran. Gunn recently took to social medial to answer some questions fans had concerning what the WGA strike end means moving forward. Including consistent casting and where the DC-verse will plant its flag to form canon events.

[Editor’s note: SAG-AFTRA is still on strike. So production on some projects is still a long way off.]

Gunn reconfirmed that the casting from such projects as “Blue Beetle” and “Peacemaker” would remain the same going forward. Xolo Maridueña, John Cena, and Viola Davis will all continue to take part in their respective DC Studios films and series. More importantly, Gunn’s “DCU Chapter 1: Gods and Monsters” will reportedly begin production. It will start with the “Creature Commandos” animates series that will feature a significant cast, including Davis’ character Amanda Waller. [Editor’s note: some animated projects are allowed during SAG-AFTRA’s ongoing strike.]

It All Starts From “Creature Commandos”

“Nothing is cannon until ‘Creature Commandos‘ next year – a sort of aperitif to the DCU – & then a deeper dive into the universe with Superman: Legacy after that,” Gunn said. “It’s a very human drive to want to understand everything all the time, but I think it’s okay to be confused on what’s happening in the DCU since no one has seen anything from the DCU yet.”

Gunn lauds DC Studios as a new and improved universe, possibly hoping to bring it the same success as the MCU. He’s thrilled the WGA strike is over, as he couldn’t spend his time working on scripts. “Although I’m very happy with the outcome, the strike was a real wrench in the process for sure.” But it sounds like Gunn’s got a whole map planned out for future projects.

We’ll let you know what we hear about this and other news.
