There are few series as unique as “Our Flag Means Death.” A pirate dramady that’s delightfully queer and has garnered a huge fanbase from its first season. A series that was unashamed of subverting common romance tropes, and leaned gleefully into them. The promise of a second was tentative for a while before HBO confirmed it.

Since then, we’ve been clamoring to know when season 2 will premiere and where the story will go. Finally, we have a little bit of a sneak peek on what to expect!

Season 1 brought us both joy and heartbreak, leaving the finale on a cliffhanger rife with questions. Now season 2 will take us on a greater roller coaster. Though apparently not in the ways we might expect. “It doesn’t follow the expected route,” according to Con O’Neill (who plays fan favorite Izzy Hands).

Apparently show creator David Jenkins delights in taking his stories on lovingly-crafted circuitous routes to reach their destination. “I don’t think David Jenkins is ever going to follow an expected route,” O’Neill said. “I’d hate to drive in a car with him. I think they’re going to appreciate what [Jenkins] wants. Season two does stick to the original premise that we created in season one, which is take it on to other levels.”

New look, new locations, new cast!

Season 2 explores and expands on the relationships seeded in the first. Also expanding is the world itself, with characters traveling to bigger and better locations. “The viewers will see the scope of their world has expanded based on the fact we’re able to get to these amazing locations within a short travel time,” executive producer Antoine Douaihy said. “You will notice a marked difference between the two seasons in terms of the scope and the scale.’’

We’ll be seeing new faces this coming season. Famous female pirate Anne Bonny will make an appearance, played by Minnie Driver. As well as Ruibo Qian as a mysterious merchant named Susan. Two other new Kiwi cast members will make their appearance. Madeleine Sami of “Deadloch” and Samoan-born Anapela Polataivao.

On top of new faces and places, a new costume designer has been brought on this season. Gypsy Taylor‘s brought a brand new rock-and-roll, punk fusion to the outfits this season. According to Taylor, the costumes have a “Mad Max, ‘streets of New York’ feel. David Jenkins was keen to give the series a cool rock-and-roll vibe…so we had these rock-and-roll elements with an 18th-century twist.”

The more details that come out, the more excited we are! Season 2 of “Our Flag Means Death” is expected to hit sometime in October 2023. We’ll let you know when we hear about a set release date.
