Bad Bunny Spider-Man Spin-Off “El Muerto” Off Sony Slate

In the wake of the massive success of “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse Part 1,” Sony is still trying to find ground in the super-hero live action market. Though there seems to be significant difficulty doing so. Which seems to be why they’ve axed of one of their spin-off films “El Muerto” starring Bad Bunny. A shame given it would have been the studio’s first Marvel property film to have a Latino star as the lead.

The character El Muerto, Juan-Carlos Estrada Sanchez, is a luchador whose powers stem directly from his mask. A family heirloom that was passed down for generations. He has thrown down with Spider-Man once or twice in comics, before realizing that he and the web-slinger are on the same side of justice. Though there was no word as to whether Spider-Man would cameo in the film.

Bunny himself was very excited for the film. “To bring El Muerto to life is just incredible… so exciting,” he said. But unfortunately Sony seems to have found a reason to strike it from the calendar of upcoming films. Moving ahead and slotting other films in place of “El Muerto” including “Dumb Money,” which is about the Gamestop stock frenzy. Originally “El Meurto” was originally scheduled for January 12th, 2024.

Sony has faced significant difficulty making live-action super hero films. Both “Venom” films did well, but wasn’t a stunner in terms of profits, even though a third is on the way. And “Morbius” became a complete embarrassment across social media and box office sites, but has a sequel in the works. They’ve proven a much greater strength in animation and video games. But they seem determined to continue this string of Unwantedverse films. The next entry in the Sinister Six is “Kraven the Hunter,” due out October 6th. “Madame Web” comes after that on February 16th, 2024.
