“Barbie: The Movie” Caused International Pink Paint Shortage

Greta Gerwig‘s “Barbie: The Movie” starring Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling tried to recreate every aspect of classic Barbie playsets. Right down to the dayglo pinks they’re known for. In fact, the production used enough pink to paint Barbie’s house, it caused an international shortage!

According to production designer Sarah Greenwood, Barbie Land was built from scratch and modeled after the actual Barbie Dreamhouse. Complete with a heart-shaped bed, walk-in closet, and third story slide that leads straight to the pool. In order to really maintain the level of nostalgia and child-like playfulness of Barbie. Naturally, the whole affair had to be in those pinks that only Barbie does so well.

“Maintaining the ‘kid-ness’ was paramount,” Greenwood said. “I wanted the pinks to be very bright, and everything to be almost too much… [I didn’t want to] forget what made me love Barbie when I was a little girl.” But in order to slather the Barbie World and dreamhouse in all that bright pink, it caused a shortage of the hue internationally. Most films don’t tend to go monochrome, but this flick left a few hardware stores empty of that rosy tint.

“Barbie” stars Robbie and Gosling as well as an all-star cast including Will Ferrell, John Cena, Rhea Perlman, Dua Lipa, Issa Rae, Emma Mackey, Alexandra Shipp, and Kate McKinnon, just to name a few. And apparently a killer soundtrack just as bursting with talented artists. It hits theaters July 21st.
