Mike Mignola Says New “Hellboy” Movie is ‘Solid’ Adaptation

Mike Mignola is thrilled with the upcoming “Hellboy: The Crooked Man” film. The movie has just wrapped and, according to creator Mignola, is sure to be the most faithful adaptation yet. Granted, the graphic novelist has made this statement before regarding other films. But we see it as seeing something beautiful in each adaptation before seeing it done even better the next time. Mignola has a hand in this upcoming film, having co-written the script with Christopher Golden. So we don’t have to worry about accuracy concerning the bright red monster-fighting demon.

This Hellboy film will see the stone-handed hellspawn take on The Crooked Man, a horrific villain from the comics. And Mignola seems well-pleased over the outcome of filming. “I wasn’t on set for this one but they have been nice enough to send me dailies and I have to say I have loved what I’ve been seeing,” Mignola said. “If fans have been waiting for a Hellboy film that is actually an adaptation of one of my stories I think they are finally going to get one.”

Mignola’s only regret is that comic artist Richard Corben, the illustrator of “Hellboy: The Crooked Man” the graphic novel, is no longer alive to see the novel’s villain realized on film. “The Crooked Man” takes place in Appalachia, where Hellboy and a rookie agent of the BPRD (That’s Bureau of Paranormal Research and Defense) take on a group of witches led by The Crooked Man — a resident devil of the area.

We’ll have to wait and see whether Mignola’s truly hit on the best possible adaptation. The film doesn’t have a release date yet, but we’ll let you know what we hear.
