Marvel Studios Shares Rocket’s Heartbreaking Backstory in Clip

“Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.3″ hits theaters soon. With a month to go, a new clip has been shared. If you’re faint of heart, be warned. The clip, titled “Naming,” takes a look at the horrific past of Rocket Raccoon, alongside his friends. James Gunn and Marvel Studios want viewers to rest assured no animals were harmed.

But if you’re squeamish about any trauma to animals, even CG ones, this might not be the clip for you.

The clip is less than two minutes long, but fully demonstrates how much you should hate the antagonist of the film; The High Evolutionary, played by Chukwudi Iwuji. According to Gunn, he is “the best villain we’ve had in the Guardians movies…I’ve never seen a villain in any of the Marvel movies that people f***ing despise. They f***ing hate him so much.”

Well, there’s a very simple reason for that. The High Evolutionary is heartlessly cruel to animals. Tearing their bodies apart to make them into creations of his own design. In order to build a new civilization of animal-human hybrids.

A Sad Beginning For a Fan Favorite

The clip features three more animals like Rocket, all modified in their own ways. Lylla the Otter, Teefs the Walrus, and Floor the Rabbit. Including Rocket, they lay on the floor of a dirty metal enclosure. Dreaming of the “new world” their “sire” will open to them. As they daydream, they give themselves names, previously only labeled with experiment numbers. It’s heartbreaking to see them daydream for something better. Seeming to view what’s been done to them is normal and necessary. No doubt having had the assumption impressed upon them by their captor.

“Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3″ hits theaters May 5th. Be sure to bring tissues, as this will be the last installment and likely break our hearts a bit along the way.
