Robert Kirkman Remaking “The Mole People” for Universal

Universal Pictures continues to raid its vault of classic monsters, but this time we are getting a deep cut with a revamped version of “The Mole People.” The remake will be produced by creator of “The Walking Dead“ Robert Kirkman, and Dave Alpert of Skybound. The concept to remake the 1956 film came from Christopher Winterbauer (“Wyrm”), who will also write the script.

The remake will follow a woman who travels to a town shrouded in a conspiracy, to rescue her grandchildren from their father.  But to get to them she must first fight through hell in the town’s underground tunnels. And, of course, doing battle with the Mole People who live there.

The 1956 version centers around archaeologists who stumble upon the underground lair of the Mole People.  A race that can see in low light and no longer have pigmentation after dwelling in the darkness for so long. They are ruled by a high priest who is threatened by the archaeologists and wants them dead. Clearly, this new film will be a very different take on the story.

“The Mole People” was directed by Virgil W. Vogel (“Mario and the Mob“), with a story written by László Görög (“The Alaskans“), and produced by William Alland. It starred John Agar (“Body Bags“), Hugh Beaumont (“The Human Duplicators“), and Cynthia Patrick (“Perry Mason“). The black and white film was originally run as a double feature with the jungle adventure film “Curucu, Beast of the Amazon.” But has since sealed its campy status by being featured on episodes of “Mystery Science Theater 3000” and “Svengoolie.”

There is no word on a cast for the remake yet, let alone a release date. But will keep you posted on updates about “The Mole People”  remake as they develop. Check out a classic trailer for the original film below:
