Stephanie Allain has joined the team of David Gordon Green’s “The Exorcist” as executive producer. The film, first in the trilogy by Blumhouse and Morgan Creek for Universal and Peacock, recently wrapped principal photography.

Producer Jason Blum expressed excitement about Allain joining the team, calling her “the coolest and steadiest producer around.” Allain expressed her delight at working with Blumhouse, David Gordon Green, and Leslie Odom Jr. on a new version of one of her favorite films.

The cast includes Leslie Odom Jr., Ann Dowd, Lidya Jewett, Jennifer Nettles, and Ellen Burstyn, who is reprising her role as Chris MacNeil from the original 1973 film. The original “Exorcist” was the highest-grossing horror movie for 44 years, earning over $441 million and receiving 10 Academy Award nominations, including a nomination for Burstyn for Best Actress. It was also the first horror film ever nominated for Best Picture.

Allain is an experienced producer who has worked on a number of films. She has an impressive background including “Hustle & Flow,” “Something New” and “Black Snake Moan.” Allain has also executive produced four seasons of “Dear White People,” and became the first African American woman to produce the Academy Awards in 2020. In 2022, she was elected the first woman of color to serve as President of the Producers Guild of America.

The team behind “The Exorcist” includes Scott Teems, Danny McBride, and Green. Green (“Halloween Kills“) also collaborated on the story written by Peter Sattler. Blumhouse is producing the film, while David Robinson and James Robinson will produce for Morgan Creek. Green, Danny McBride, and Couper Samuelson will executive produce, with Ryan Turek overseeing the project for Blumhouse.

The Blumhouse horror remake “The Exorcist” hits theaters October 13th, 2023.
