Adult animated series “South Park” is turning 25 years old. In celebration, co-creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone will be putting on a concert featuring performances by Primus and Ween.
The concert itself is peppered with several in-jokes and references to the show’s own history. It’s being held in Colorado because Parker and Stone first met at the University of Colorado Boulder. This meeting eventually lead them to create a crude VHS Christmas card that was clearly a blueprint and early iteration of “South Park.”
The concert is being hosted at Red Rocks because it is where a friend of the pair was able to get Primus’ Les Claypool to re-record the theme song, on a handheld tape recorder. “South Park” had already been picked up by Comedy Central, but the network felt the original theme song was too slow. And yes, Primus will be playing the theme song at the concert. The band Ween has also appeared on, and done songs for the show that they will also be performing.
Probably the biggest show reference is the date it will air on Comedy Central. While the concert itself takes place on August 9th and 10th, it won’t air on Comedy Central until August 13th. The very first episode of “South Park” aired in 1997 on August 13th, both in a 10 p.m. time slot. Meaning the “South Park: The 25th Anniversary Concert” will be airing exactly 25 years after its launch.
Parker and Stone’s South Park: The 25th Anniversary Concert will be held at the Red Rocks Amphitheater in Colorado. The event will be held on August 9th – 10th, and if you can’t make the trek to see it in person it will be taped and air on Comedy Central on August 13th. It will be available on Paramount+ August 14th.
