Neopets User Data Held for Ransom, 69 Million Effected

If you still enjoy logging into Neopets and playing with your Kougra, you may want to change some of your passwords. At this point it’s not advised you change your Neopets password or pin number, but if you share a password with your email, Facebook or any other social media account, change those now. Neopets has been hacked, and it’s affecting 69 million users.

The account information is being ransomed for $94,500, or 4 bitcoins. Jellyneo has more information on the massive security breach. Full account information, email address, passwords, gender, IP addresses, countries and birthdays are available for sale on a hacker website.

Will update once TNT posts an update confirming that this access has been closed.

Jellyneo also reports a Redditor claiming they’ve had access to the back end of the site for about a year now. They are able to tell who cheats and who’s shadow banned from things like the Altador Cup.

“TNT has failed to address this security leak, and now we’re finding someone else selling access on the black market,” Jellyneo claims.

Neopets was just getting off the ground again. The app for phones has been out a few years, the site was getting better and they were just teaming up with artists and selling merch. There’s no word on how this might effect the franchise, but if it’s anything like CloudPet security breach, we’re in for a load of trouble.
