A man has been charged after creating a scheme where he was buying Super Bowl rings to resell. Scott V. Spina Jr. reportedly posed as former New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady.

The deal was that Spina Jr. was going to get additional Super Bowl IV rings made with the engraving of Brady on them. He said he was going to use them as “family gifts,” for family members of 7-time Super Bowl champion Brady. Then, Spina Jr. was going to sell them online. He managed to sell one for over $337,000 before he was caught.

Now the 24-year-old is facing one count of mail fraud, three counts of wire fraud and one count of aggravated identity theft. According to reports, he’s agreed to plead guilty to all five counts.

The authorities were able to track down Spina Jr. to 2017, when he bought a Super Bowl ring from a former Patriots player. He used at least one bad check, and allegedly sold the ring for $63,000.

US Attorney’s Office, Los Angeles CA

According to the US Attorneys Office, Spina called the Ring Company, fraudulently identified himself as [the former player], and started ordering three family and friend Super Bowl LI rings with the name ‘Brady’ engraved on each one, which he falsely represented were gifts for the baby of quarterback Tom Brady.”

“The rings were at no time authorized by Tom Brady. Defendant Spina intended to obtain the three rings by fraud and to sell them at a substantial profit,” the report continued.

Though Spina is from New Jersey, he will be appearing in federal court in Los Angeles on January 31st, 2022.
