3 Extrusion Machine Maintenance Mistakes You Need to Know

A sudden drop in output is rarely the machine failing overnight — more often, it traces back to small habits on the line. Many costly breakdowns start with overlooked extrusion machine upkeep. This article walks through three common extruder maintenance mistakes that quietly reduce output, and the simple practices that help keep your line running stably and reliably.

Mistake 1: Not Checking the Screw-to-Barrel Clearance

The clearance between the screws and the barrel wall—typically 0.1% to 0.5% of the barrel’s internal diameter (depending on screw size and design)—gradually changes as parts wear. As it widens through abrasion (from fillers like calcium carbonate or glass fibers) or corrosion, material leaks backward, reducing output, destabilizing pressure, and worsening plasticization. Too tight, and friction causes overheating, degradation, and metal-on-metal contact.

So measure it before output tells you something’s wrong. Use an internal micrometer, bore gauge, or feeler gauge to check the clearance at several points along the barrel, and track how it changes over time against the manufacturer’s tolerance. And on a PVC line, always purge at shutdown, then run at low speed until the barrel is empty so residual rigid PVC can’t degrade inside it.

This is also where build quality pays off. Boyu Machinery’s extrusion machines use quality screw and barrel components designed to hold stable clearance longer, so this wear develops far more slowly in the first place.

Mistake 2: Overlooking Heater Bands and Thermocouples

Heater bands and thermocouples keep the barrel heating evenly for consistent melting. When they fail, you get unstable motor current, high starting torque, blocked discharge from poorly plasticized material, and surface defects like bubbles.

A multimeter tells you most of what you need to know. Check band-heater resistance: an “OL” reading means the wire has burned out and the heater needs replacing, while a near-zero reading means a dangerous short to ground. On an insulation test, a quality multimeter or megohmmeter should read infinite (OL) between terminal and sheath—any measurable value (5 MΩ or less) flags a possible ground fault.

Beyond spot checks, compare each zone’s actual temperature against its setpoint daily, since a drifting zone is easy to miss until it shows up in the product.

On Boyu Machinery lines, this gets easier: a PLC control system gives precise, zone-by-zone temperature monitoring on every plastic extrusion machine, so deviations surface early—before they reach your finished floor.

Mistake 3: Skipping Gearbox Oil and Lubrication Checks

The gearbox and motor are the system’s “drive,” and their failure triggers the most expensive repairs in the plant. Insufficient or contaminated lubrication is a leading cause of damaged bearings and abnormal noise. Running on aged oil can spread damage across components severe enough to force a full equipment replacement, almost always with unplanned downtime.

Changing the oil on schedule and glancing at it for discoloration or metal particles costs a little labor up front—but it’s nothing next to the loss from a halted line and unfilled orders. Check the oil level and condition regularly, and inspect gears, bearings, and oil seals on a fixed schedule so small problems get caught before they cascade. Boyu Machinery’s CE-certified construction and robust gearbox are built precisely for this kind of reliable long-run operation, helping cut the downtime that eats into margins.

How Boyu Machinery Makes Maintenance Easier

The three habits above go further on a machine built to support them. That’s what Boyu Machinery’s extrusion machines are designed to do:

    • Quality screw and barrel components hold clearance stable for longer, slowing the wear behind Mistake 1.
    • A PLC control system monitors temperature precisely across zones, making the drift in Mistake 2 easier to catch early.
    • CE-certified construction and a robust drive system are built for reliable long-run operation, keeping the gearbox troubles in Mistake 3 from becoming downtime.
    • A global technical and after-sales team stands behind every line, because good habits and well-built machines work best together.

Built around stable clearance, precise temperature control, and a robust drive, a Boyu Machinery extrusion machine turns good maintenance habits into lasting, reliable, high-output flooring production.
