One-Step vs Two-Step vs Direct Funding: Which Prop Firm Model Fits You?

Choosing a prop firm challenge is not simply about finding the easiest route to a funded account. One-step, two-step, and direct funding models each demand something different from traders.

These are not difficulty levels. They are three different currencies for buying access to capital. The right choice depends on which currency you can most afford to spend.

Three ways of paying for the same thing

Every funded account is bought. The only real question is what with. A single-phase evaluation asks for concentrated performance: one target, cleared once, with nothing to hide behind. A two-phase route asks for repetition instead, splitting the same proof across two smaller demands and a longer stretch of discipline. An instant account asks for neither, and takes payment in cash and in constraint a larger fee at the start and a permanently tighter rulebook afterwards.

Ranked by difficulty, the three look like a ladder. They are not. They are priced in different units, and most traders choose badly by reaching for the currency they hold least of.

    The bill, itemized

Profit splitTop tierTop tierUsually a step below
Freedom once fundedOften the most permissiveMiddleMost constrained
Where people quitChasing the single targetPhase two, once motivation fadesThe first consistency gate

Typical structure across the industry. Exact terms vary by firm and by plan.

The fee comparison is the least useful row on that table. A cheaper route you are temperamentally unsuited to is more expensive than a dearer one you can actually finish, because the real price of any model is its fee multiplied by the number of attempts it takes you to clear it. Choose for fit first and the cost mostly resolves itself.

Who each model is wrong for

One-step   │   PAYS IN a single concentrated effort

Wrong for the impatient. The route is shorter, but the target is not smaller, usually the opposite. Compressing a 10% objective into a fortnight is exactly the pressure that produces oversized positions, and the shorter path flatters traders who mistake speed for edge.

Two-step   │   PAYS IN sustained repetition

Wrong for the inconsistent. The second phase exists precisely to catch traders whose first result was a good month rather than a method. Half the work arrives after the excitement has worn off, which is why phase two, not phase one, is where most attempts quietly end.

Direct funding   │   PAYS IN cash and permanent constraint

Wrong for the undisciplined. Skipping the evaluation does not remove the assessment, it relocates it to the payout stage, where consistency requirements and narrower permissions apply for as long as the account exists. You have not avoided being tested; you have agreed to be tested continuously.

Where all three sit under one rulebook

Choosing between models only works if the terms of each are comparable, which is where published prop firm challenge rules matter more than marketing. Hola Prime runs all three structures and sets them out on a single comparison page:

    RouteProfit targetMaximum lossLeverageSplit
    1-Step Prime10%6% static50:1Up to 95%
    2-Step Pro8%, then 5%10% static100:1Up to 95%
    Direct AccountNone7% EOD trailing50:1Up to 90%

Forex conditions as published by Hola Prime; daily loss limits are calculated on the previous day’s closing balance.

    • One phase, top split. The one step prime challenge asks a single 10% target against a static 6% maximum loss, and news trading and weekend holding stay permitted after funding a combination that is genuinely uncommon.
    • Two phases, more room. As a two step prop firm route, the Pro challenge trades a second target for a 10% maximum loss and leverage up to 100:1, which suits traders who need width rather than speed.
    • No phase at all. The Direct Account sits with instant funded prop firms with no target, immediate access, a 7% end-of-day trailing limit and up to 90% of profits, with a 20% consistency requirement on every payout cycle.
    • One rulebook, and a published pass rate. The same page carries the prop firm challenge rules for every route, and the firm publishes its evaluation pass rate 35% between November 2024 and May 2025. Very few of the best prop firms publish that figure at all.

    THREE QUESTIONS, ONE ANSWER

Want one target and the widest freedom afterwards?→  The one step prime challenge
Prefer smaller targets and more drawdown room?→  The two step prop firm route
Want to skip the evaluation altogether?→  The Direct Account, among instant funded prop firms

Three different answers to the question this article asks and all of them land in the same place. That is what makes Hola Prime the clear winner: not that it wins any single model, but that it is the one firm you never have to leave when your answer changes. Among the best prop firms, that breadth under a single published rulebook is the rarest thing on offer.
