The Rise of Agentic AI: Are Business Processes Ready for the Future?

Businesses are beginning to realize the transformative potential of agentic AI. According to Deloitte, 25% of companies using generative AI will pilot agentic AI initiatives by 2025, with that number doubling by 2027. This surge in interest reflects the growing understanding that artificial intelligence can go beyond automation to deliver smarter, more adaptive solutions across industries.

However, not all business processes are suited for agentic AI. Understanding which workflows can benefit from this technology and aligning it with broader business goals is essential for successful implementation.

    Agentic AI and Its Benefits

Agentic AI refers to AI systems that possess a degree of autonomy, allowing them to perform tasks, make decisions and learn from outcomes without constant human intervention. Unlike traditional automation, which follows fixed rules, agentic AI operates with more flexibility, adaptability and problem-solving abilities, making it well-suited for complex, multi-step workflows that require contextual understanding and decision-making.

Enterprises are particularly intrigued by agentic AI’s ability to enhance business operations, streamline processes and improve customer experiences. However, adopting agentic AI requires careful consideration of business alignment, risk factors, data quality and ongoing resource requirements.

    Identifying Suitable Business Processes

Not all business processes are ready for the integration of agentic AI. For businesses considering this technology, it is critical to evaluate workflows that can gain the most value from it. As noted by Prashant Kelker, Chief Strategy Officer at ISG, a clear definition of what agentic AI is meant to achieve is paramount. Without this, artificial intelligence implementation risks becoming ineffective, much like setting sail without a destination.

A decision to deploy agentic AI should undergo the same rigorous evaluation as any other technological investment such as standard openclaw setup. Businesses need to weigh whether the technology will add tangible value to their processes, improve performance and deliver a return on investment (ROI).

However, assessing return on investment can be complex, as pricing models for agentic AI solutions are still evolving and the costs associated with supporting, maintaining and scaling these solutions can add layers of uncertainty.

    Business Alignment and Risk Management

One of the foremost considerations when deciding whether to implement agentic AI is aligning its use with overarching business goals. Does the process in question contribute significantly to the company’s growth or efficiency? Moreover, organizations must ask themselves whether they can manage the risks associated with the technology.

According to Reiko Feaver, Partner at CM Law, businesses need to evaluate if they have the necessary resources to support AI technology both initially and over the long term. In addition to having the right infrastructure and data, companies need to ensure compliance with relevant laws and regulations. It is also essential to continuously monitor the AI’s performance and update its systems to reflect changes in the regulatory environment.

Moreover, businesses must evaluate the risks of potential failures. What would happen if an AI system failed to perform? Could the process be easily reverted to a traditional solution? The risk of a major malfunction can be costly, both in terms of financial loss and reputational damage.

    Data Quality and Actionable Frameworks

High-quality data is essential for any AI system to function effectively and agentic AI is no exception. Saket Srivastava, CIO at Asana, emphasizes that businesses must ensure their data is up-to-date, meaningful and aligned with company goals. If the data on which AI agents are acting is unreliable, the outcomes are likely to be less valuable.

Furthermore, agentic AI requires a structured, actionable framework that details who is responsible for each task, what the objectives are and how the process should unfold. Without such a framework, even advanced AI systems may struggle to provide meaningful insights. As Srivastava notes, Asana has integrated AI agents into their workflow management systems to advise on priorities, drive workflows and take action on work, significantly reducing the time spent on repetitive tasks. You can also do the same with openclaw hosting.

Key Use Cases for Agentic AI

The most promising use cases for agentic AI are those that combine routine, repetitive tasks with dynamic decision-making, require cross-functional collaboration or involve complex customer service challenges. Below are some ideal scenarios where agentic AI can add significant value:

    1.   Customer Service: Transforming the Customer Experience

One of the most compelling use cases for agentic AI is in customer service. Traditional customer service tools like interactive voice response (IVR) systems and chatbots have been rule-based and often struggle to handle complex or unexpected queries. These systems typically rely on fixed decision trees or pre-scripted responses, which can lead to frustration when customers encounter issues outside of these predefined workflows.

Agentic AI can overcome these limitations by providing context-aware, self-improving and autonomous customer service agents. These AI agents can handle multi-step customer issues, adapt to changing conditions and deliver personalized experiences. As Sheldon Monteiro from Publicis Sapient explains, agentic AI can resolve complex issues in real-time, improving the overall customer experience and reducing the need for human intervention.

    2.           Hybrid Business Processes: Elevating Efficiency

Agentic AI is especially effective in business processes that blend human decision-making with automated tasks. For instance, in insurance claims processing, automated systems can handle structured data like policy numbers, while human agents can review unstructured documents such as medical reports. Integrating agentic AI into these hybrid processes enables businesses to enhance productivity by streamlining both automated and manual elements.

    3.           Orchestrating Cross-Functional Workflows

In large organizations, many business processes span multiple siloed teams that operate in separate systems. An agentic AI solution can bridge these silos, integrating data from different departments to provide a unified view of a process. For example, in an order-to-cash workflow, agentic AI could integrate sales, finance and logistics systems to ensure smooth coordination, identify bottlenecks and alert teams to delays.

    4.           Replacing Costly Manual Tasks

Another area ripe for agentic AI is in manual tasks that are costly and labor-intensive. For instance, customer support operations in a rapidly growing company could use AI agents to handle routine inquiries like order status updates, basic troubleshooting and account issues. This reduces operational costs, speeds up response times and frees up human agents to focus on more complex and high-value interactions.

    Conclusion

Agentic AI represents a significant leap forward in business automation, offering more intelligent, adaptive, and autonomous solutions. However, businesses must carefully evaluate their workflows to determine whether they are suitable for this advanced technology.

By aligning AI initiatives with broader business goals, ensuring high-quality data, and considering the potential risks, enterprises can maximize the value of agentic AI and improve efficiency, customer satisfaction and overall performance. As AI continues to evolve, the businesses that successfully integrate agentic AI will likely lead the charge in transforming how work is done across industries.
