What a Buffalo Car Crash Does to a Solo Founder’s Business

You’re driving to a client kickoff on the 33 through Buffalo, laptop in the passenger seat, Stripe dashboard open on your phone. A pickup rolls a red at Elmwood, and the next thing you remember is an airbag and a paramedic asking your name. Six weeks later you’re not sleeping past 4 a.m., your neck won’t turn left, and the invoices you meant to send are still sitting in drafts.

Nobody covers you. There’s no HR. Founders talk about churn, runway, and burnout, but a car crash is one of the more common ways a solo operator loses months of productive work in a single afternoon.

The Client-Meeting Crash Wipes Out Your Pipeline, Not Just Your Week

You had four discovery calls booked on-site this month. After the crash you cancel two, reschedule two, and the rescheduled ones ghost. That’s not the accident’s fault in a way an insurer will accept, but it’s the accident’s fault in the way your bank account will feel it. Solo consulting revenue is a relationship trickle, and if you break the trickle for six weeks, the pipeline drains.

The move that matters is unglamorous: document everything from day one. Save the ER discharge paperwork, the physical therapy referrals, the mileage logs, and calendar screenshots of the meetings you had to kill. If lost income becomes part of a claim later, you want a paper trail a claims adjuster can’t wave off.

The Delivery Run Crash Kills Fulfillment Before It Kills Sales

If you run an e-commerce or handmade side business, you’re at the post office more than you’re at a desk. A rear-ending on the way to drop off packages doesn’t announce itself as a business event, but that’s what it is. Shipments go out late, reviews soften, and return requests climb because customers assume you’ve abandoned them.

    • A backup fulfillment plan. Even an informal one, like a friend with a key to the workshop, buys you two weeks without a public meltdown.
    • Vendor and platform notifications. Etsy, Shopify, and Amazon Handmade all let you set vacation mode or a shipping delay banner. Flip them on the day of the crash, not the week the complaints start piling up.
    • A short customer email template. Write it now, while you’re healthy. A brief note about a family emergency and late shipments beats radio silence.

The Rideshare-and-Delivery Crash Puts You in the Coverage Gap

Plenty of people pay the bills with Uber, Lyft, DoorDash, or Instacart while they build something else. Get hit while the app is on and your personal auto policy and the platform’s coverage don’t line up as neatly as either party pretends. Coverage shifts depending on whether you had a passenger, whether you were en route to a pickup, and whether the other driver was insured at all.

In New York, no-fault Personal Injury Protection pays medical bills and part of lost wages regardless of who caused the crash. But you have to file the written claim quickly, and the no-fault process and its arbitration timelines are worth reading before you ever need them.

The Local Numbers Are Worse Than You Think

Buffalo is not a low-crash city. Narrow one-way grids downtown, aggressive left turns off Delaware, and winter roads turn a two-second lapse into a body shop appointment. According to reporting from Investigative Post, 78 fatal crashes killed 88 people across Erie and Niagara counties in 2022, and 24 of those fatal wrecks happened inside Buffalo itself.

Fatalities are the tail. The much larger middle of the distribution, the wrecks that produce herniated discs and concussions and months of physical therapy, is where founder productivity goes to die.

What to Actually Do in the First 72 Hours

The window right after a crash is when founders make the worst decisions, because they treat it like a Tuesday inconvenience instead of a business event. A cleaner sequence, in order:

    1. Get checked out. Even if you feel fine. Soft tissue and concussion symptoms can show up 24 to 72 hours later, and a same-day medical record is worth more than any argument you’ll try to make later.
    2. File the no-fault claim. In New York, do it in writing, well inside the 30-day window. Don’t rely on a phone call.
    3. Photograph everything twice. Vehicle damage, the scene, your injuries as they develop, and the other driver’s plate and insurance card. Store it somewhere that isn’t only your phone.
    4. Pause the business publicly. Turn on the auto-responder, put up the vacation banner, and tell your top three clients before they find out from a missed deadline.
    5. Talk to a lawyer before the other driver’s insurer does. For a serious crash with lost income and ongoing treatment, a conversation with a Buffalo car accident attorney costs you nothing up front and keeps you from saying something on a recorded line that caps your recovery before you understand what you gave up.

    Founder Risk Is Personal Risk

You can’t insure your way out of a bad afternoon on I-190, but you can treat the possibility as a real line item: a documented emergency plan, a fulfillment fallback, honest disability coverage if you can afford it, and a clear head about what to do in the first three days. The founders who get through this without watching a year of work evaporate are the ones who thought about it once, in advance, when nothing was on fire.
