Behind the Mesh: How Nasty Rodent Co-Created the Tactical Realism of Squad

In the world of tactical, large-scale military shooters, there is absolutely zero room for compromise when it comes to visual authenticity. Players who clock thousands of hours in Offworld Industries’ tactical masterpiece game Squad, don’t just play, they inspect. They know the exact weld lines on an armored personnel carrier, the precise recoil guide on a service rifle, and the subtle wear on a helicopter rotor.

For an art studio, delivering assets for a game of this caliber is the ultimate test of skill.

As a premier hard surface art outsourcing studio, Nasty Rodent has spent years working hand-in-hand with developers to bring these uncompromising war machines and infantry gear to life. From heavily armored ground forces to high-altitude jets, and from historical faction weapons to intricate skin concepts, here is an inside look at how our team shaped the battlefields of Squad.

From Blueprint to Battlefield: Building the Air & Ground Fleet

Vehicles in Squad are not mere props or simple transport blocks – they are complex gameplay systems. If a tire or a rotor blade doesn’t look like it can support actual tonnage, the illusion of tactical realism immediately breaks.

For the Nasty Rodent team, vehicle art production is a masterclass in combining high-fidelity CAD/blueprint reference with strict budget optimization for Unreal Engine.

    • Ground Forces (Armored Vehicles & APCs): Whether it was modeling the intricate suspension systems, functional tire treads, or modular armor plating (such as the Turkish PARS III APC), our artists ensured every bolt, hinge, and weld seam was structurally accurate. We balanced high-poly bake quality with optimized low-poly meshes to ensure that even during chaotic 100-player matches, performance never dropped.
    • Aviation (Helicopters & Fighter Jets): Creating flight-capable assets like the UH-1H Huey or the F-16 jet presented unique challenges. Aircraft demand a dual-perspective approach. They must look hyper-realistic from a distance on a massive map, yet withstand ultra-close inspection when a player climbs into the cockpit or walks past them on the runway. Our artists meticulously mapped functional cockpit instruments, landing gear mechanics, and turbine interiors, delivering flight-ready assets designed for optimal visual impact.

Precision Engineering: The Role of a 3D Weapons Artist in Tactical Shooters

Ask any dedicated Squad player, and they will tell you: the weapon is the main character.

When a game relies on realistic ballistics, manual chambering, and close-quarters aiming, a 3D weapons artist must think like a gunsmith. For our weapon outsource pipeline, this meant translating real-world firearms into pixel-perfect, highly functional game assets.

    • Mechanical Integrity: Every weapon we designed-including complex optics, bipods, and reload mechanisms-was built with animation in mind. Receivers, bolts, triggers, and charging handles were modeled as separate, perfectly aligned elements. This allowed animators to execute realistic, satisfying weapon manipulation without clipping or visual glitches.
    • PBR Texturing & Storytelling: We don’t just apply textures, we tell stories through wear and tear. Using advanced PBR (Physically Based Rendering) workflows, our artists added micro-scratches on anodized aluminum, subtle dust build-up in receiver crevices, and realistic oil sheen on moving steel components.

Visual Identity: Designing Weapon Skin Concepts

While Squad thrives on realism, personalization through cosmetic skins adds a crucial layer of player expression. Our 2D and 3D concept teams collaborated to design weapon skin concepts that look visually striking while respecting the grounded military aesthetic of the game.

We avoided neon, unrealistic palettes in favor of weathered camouflages, unit-specific custom engravings, battle-worn finishes, and field-applied paint jobs. Our goal was to create skins that felt like they were applied by a soldier waiting in a muddy trench, rather than a factory machine.

Bringing Modern Armies to Life: The Turkish and Ukrainian Factions

One of our proudest contributions to Squad was our extensive involvement in developing assets for major playable factions, including the Turkish Land Forces and the Ukrainian Armed Forces.

Representing a real-world military in a video game carries immense cultural and historical responsibility. Our artists conducted deep-dive research into:

    • National Small Arms & Unique Equipment: From the standard-issue service rifles to specialized squad-support weapons, we ensured that every piece of gear was instantly recognizable to real-world veterans and military enthusiasts.
    • Faction-Specific Vehicles: Custom camouflage patterns, localized markings, and specific armor variants were modeled with pinpoint accuracy, giving each faction a distinct tactile feel on the digital battlefield.

Why Top Tier Developers Choose Nasty Rodent for Art Outsourcing

Working on a massive live-service title like Squad requires more than just raw artistic talent. It demands reliable pipeline integration, strict quality control, and a team of veteran artists who speak the language of game development.

At Nasty Rodent, we combine 2D concept generation, hyperrealistic 3D modeling, and expert engine integration (Unreal Engine) into a seamless, stress-free outsourcing experience. Whether your project needs a dedicated 3D weapons artist outsource team, complex vehicle designers, or environmental hard-surface assets, we bring the expertise needed to scale your production without sacrificing quality.
