How to Master CS2 Spray Patterns and Improve Your Recoil Control

In Counter-Strike 2, every automatic weapon kicks in a predictable pattern the moment you hold down the trigger. The first bullet goes exactly where you aim, but the rest climb, then drift left and right in a shape the game repeats every single time. Players who look like they have an aimbot are usually just countering that shape with practiced muscle memory.

Learning to control recoil is one of the highest-value skills you can build, and it is completely learnable. If you want side-by-side visuals and detailed explanations of how each weapon behaves, study a proper reference first and then drill what you see. Reading about a pattern gets you maybe ten percent of the way; the other ninety percent is pure repetition.

This guide explains what spray patterns are, how to counter them, and a simple practice routine that makes the AK-47 and the M4 finally feel controllable in your hands.

    What Is a Spray Pattern?

A spray pattern is the fixed path your bullets travel when you fire continuously. It is not random. The AK-47, for example, climbs sharply for the first several bullets, then sweeps right, then left, forming a rough backwards shape. Because it repeats identically every time, you can memorize it and then reverse it. Every automatic weapon in the game has its own signature pattern, which means the skill you build on one rifle carries over as you learn the next.

    Recoil Compensation Explained

The core technique is simple to state and hard to master: move your mouse in the opposite direction of the recoil. As the gun pulls up, you pull down. As it drifts right, you counter left. Done correctly, your bullets land in a tight cluster on your target instead of spraying uselessly into the sky above them.

How to Counter Recoil Step by Step

Breaking the skill into stages keeps practice from feeling random and overwhelming. Work through these in order rather than trying to do everything at once.

    • Learn the shape: fire a full magazine at a wall and study the pattern the bullet holes make.
    • Pull down first: the initial rise is the steepest part, so your biggest correction happens early.
    • Add the horizontal sweep: once vertical control feels natural, layer in the left-right counter-movement.
    • Reset between bursts: release the trigger to let the pattern restart instead of emptying the whole magazine.

    Spray, Burst, or Tap?

Distance decides your firing style, and choosing the right one matters as much as the recoil control itself. Use the quick guide below to pick your approach in each situation.

    Close

    • Technique: Full spray
    • Why It Works: Enemies fill your screen, so control beats precision

    Medium

    • Technique: Three to five round bursts
    • Why It Works: Balances damage output with accuracy

    Long

    • Technique: Single taps
    • Why It Works: Resets recoil fully between every shot

    A Simple Practice Routine

You do not need hours to improve. Fifteen focused minutes a day beats a random three-hour grind, because recoil control is built through steady, deliberate repetition rather than exhaustion.

Load an aim or recoil map, or an empty server with cheats enabled, and spray a full magazine at a wall until you can trace the pattern from memory. Then practice pulling against it until your shots form a small cluster. A helpful drill is to alternate: spray, check the wall, adjust, and spray again, treating each magazine as feedback rather than just noise. Finally, move to moving targets in deathmatch and force yourself to spray at close range instead of tapping. Consistency over weeks is what turns this from conscious effort into pure instinct.

    Weapons Worth Prioritizing

Focus your limited practice time on the guns you actually use. Master the AK-47 first, since it one-shots to the head and defines most rifle duels. Then move on to the M4A4 and M4A1-S for the Counter-Terrorist side. The submachine guns and lighter rifles have gentler patterns you can pick up naturally later.

    Common Mistakes to Avoid

Even motivated players stall out by repeating a handful of predictable errors. Check yourself against this list whenever your sprays feel off.

    • Spraying at long range when a couple of clean taps would land instead.
    • Over-correcting and dragging your shots below the target.
    • Never letting the pattern reset, so the drift phase ruins the whole burst.
    • Practicing without ever watching where your bullets actually land on the wall.

    Turn Knowledge Into Muscle Memory

Recoil control is the clearest example in CS2 of practice beating talent. The pattern never changes, which means anyone willing to put in the reps can learn it. Study the shape, counter it, and drill it daily. Within a couple of weeks the AK will stop feeling like it fights you, your bullets will land where you look, and that is the exact moment the game finally starts to click.
