Netflix’s Ghostbusters: Night Shift Brings the Franchise Back to Animation

The title is out. Showrunners Ben Hibon and Elliott Kalan, along with Ghost Corps executive producers Jason Reitman and Gil Kenan. They announced the official title and logo for Netflix and Sony Pictures Animation’s upcoming animated series: Ghostbusters: Night Shift. It’s expected to release in 2027.

The reveal happened on Ghostbusters Day at a New York City event. The announcement came with a first look at the logo. It featuring a stylized version of the classic No-Ghost symbol with a more comic-book-inspired, after-hours look.

To understand what this means, it helps to know the full picture.

Ivan Reitman‘s 1984 classic starred Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Harold Ramis, and Ernie Hudson as parapsychologists launching a ghost-catching business in New York City. That film earned nearly $300 million globally and spawned four follow-up films: Ghostbusters II (1989), Ghostbusters: Answer the Call (2016), Ghostbusters: Afterlife (2021), and Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire (2024).

Animation Has Always Been Apart of Ghostbusters

Animation has always played a key role in keeping the property alive. The Real Ghostbusters ran for seven seasons and 140 episodes beginning in 1986, on ABC and in broadcast syndication. By the time Ghostbusters: Night Shift debuts, it will have been nearly 30 years since the last animated series aired. That was 1997’s Extreme Ghostbusters, which ran for a single season and attempted to rejuvenate the franchise for the 1990s.

This will mark the third time the Ghostbusters universe has gone animated. The gap between now and the last animated chapter is significant, and the creative team behind this new chapter carries real franchise weight.

The new series keeps the recent creative team attached. Reitman and Kenan co-wrote both Ghostbusters: Afterlife and Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire. Reitman directing the former and Kenan directing the latter. Original Ghostbuster Aykroyd has also joined the series as an executive producer.

Exact plot details are under wraps, but it was reported that the 3D animated series would be tonally in line with the recent Ghostbusters films.

Kenan confirmed Ghostbusters: Night Shift is in full development, with scripts, art, and supernatural worldbuilding already underway. Fans will get an early look sooner than the 2027 premiere. Reitman, Kenan, Hibon, and Kalan will preview Ghostbusters: Night Shift at Annecy on June 24.

At the New York event, Sony Pictures EVP Jay Levine spoke to the franchise’s longevity.

“At Sony Pictures we’re incredibly proud of the lasting impact of the Ghostbusters franchise and the amazing fan community that continues to support it.”

    Levine said

There has been no word on a new live-action Ghostbusters movie, but both Ghostbusters: Afterlife and Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire were warmly received and moderate hits.

Ghostbusters: Night Shift now carries the franchise forward on Netflix, and on animation’s terms.
