Why Gen Z Is Fueling the Explosion of Sweepstakes Casinos

Sweepstakes casinos have developed from an emerging legal loophole into the most rapidly growing category of Internet gambling. This growth has been fueled by a very specific age group: Generation Z (born between 1997 and 2012) which is transforming how Americans interact with games that emulate casino style experiences; and sweepstakes gambling websites offer an opportunity for companies to target this demographic.

Gen Z by the Numbers: What the Data Shows

A Generation That Grew Up Gaming

To understand how Gen Z came to be drawn to the list of sweepstakes casinos we need to understand how this generation developed. Growing up with a smart phone in their hands, Gen Z has spent their entire lives playing games and earning in game currency on multiple mobile applications. Watching professional gamers (streamers) on twitch has also been part of their daily routine. Sweepstakes casinos are nothing but another type of game that uses the same reward mechanism – earn virtual currency, play games, claim your prizes.

Unlike previous generations of casino players, Gen Z does not see Sweepstakes casinos as anything different than just another gaming platform. There is no psychological barrier to enter into these types of gaming platforms. The dual currency system used by Sweepstakes casinos; using gold coins to play for fun & sweeps coins to redeem for cash prizes is directly related to the “freemium” business models many of them have been accustomed to since they were children.

The Legal Angle Appeals to a Risk-Aware Generation

Generation Z has been one of the most economically conservative generations in a long time. It experienced unstable economies from an early age, was witness to their parents’ experience during the 2008 financial crises, and entered into adulthood in the midst of a global pandemic. It also consistently demonstrates a more conservative approach to money when it comes to spending, than did the Millennials at this point in life.

A sweepstakes casino offers something that a traditional online casino does not: the ability for players to be able to play without being required to make a financial commitment. The Free Sweeps Coins that are available to players under the sweepstakes legal model can be received by players using no-purchase means (for example; via mail-in request, through social media promotion(s), and/or daily bonus(es)). This appeals to a generation that desires access without being obligated.

The primary reasons the legal model attracts younger players include:

    • No requirement for an initial financial deposit in order to begin playing
    • Available in most U.S. jurisdictions that prohibit gaming with real-money
    • Lower perceived financial risk relative to traditional sports betting operations and/or casinos
    • Transparent AMOE (Alternative Method of Entry) maintains participation as voluntary

Social Features and Community Drive Engagement

The Gen Z audience consumes all forms of entertainment. Therefore, top real money casinos in the USA have evolved from standalone experiences into socially-driven platforms. Leaderboards, tournament play, social gift of coins among friends, and seamless integration with social media platforms (not an afterthought but a core component) are some ways in which these social aspects are built-in for an audience who often defines “fun” as how much fun can be shared.

Additionally, the rise of streamers and content creators has provided additional value. Many popular gaming influencers on YouTube and TikTok have documented their sweepstakes casino experience. This provides them with the opportunity to show their followers’ large wins and showcase new platform features to a global audience. As Gen Z values opinions of peers more than messages from brands, this type of earned media is worth significantly more than paid advertising.

    Responsible Gaming Messaging Lands Differently

The sweepstakes casino has a unique place in relation to responsible gaming. Due to the fact that no real money can be wagered, the discussion of how to responsibly play is framed by time management and entertainment value as opposed to monetary risk. This way of discussing responsible gaming connects better with Gen Z.

What This Means for the Industry

The sweepstakes casino market has transitioned from an alternative to online gaming as a major form of entertainment. The platforms that can most accurately understand Gen Z’s preferences in gaming, their reluctance to spend money on games, how it plays games socially and its expectations for all forms of entertainment to be mobile first will drive the next phase of the sweepstakes casino industry.

In order for operators to remain viable in the sweepstakes casino space they have but one option. Either develop products with Gen Z in mind or become irrelevant. To do so requires significant investments in mobile technologies and building real gaming communities through the use of creator marketing, as well as extreme amounts of open communication with users about all elements of your platform. Gen Z transformed the world of retail and media and now it is transforming the world of finance; it is also transforming how people experience sweepstakes casinos.

Playing responsibly involves being in control of your time and budget at all times. Treat sweepstakes gaming as entertainment not a source of income.
