Britney Spears has sold the rights to her entire music catalog to independent publisher Primary Wave. This deal is reported to be comparable in size to other major artist catalog sales. The reported sum reaches around $200 million. The agreement includes many of her most recognizable hits and marks a huge financial move following the end of her long conservatorship in 2021. As she sold her share of ownership, she will not receive ongoing, future royalties.
The sale comes shortly after Spears stated she does not plan to perform in the United States again, citing personal reasons. She has expressed interest in possibly performing overseas in the future.
She should be able to do anything she wants and that includes doing nothing. Britney Spears more than deserves a break after everything she endured. During her years under conservatorship, for over a decade, she lived under intense control. She had little say over her own career, finances, and personal decisions. Despite her struggles, she was still required to perform, record music, tour, and maintain a public image. Often while dealing with immense emotional and mental strain.
Being forced to continue working under those conditions would exhaust anyone. Her residency in Las Vegas, international tours, and constant promotional obligations demanded being constantly “on”. While fans enjoyed the performances, few fully understood how little freedom she had behind the scenes.
