How Landfill Monitoring Technology is Transforming Environmental Project Management

Environmental project managers need to ensure practices that reduce energy consumption, minimize ecological impact, and so on, to make sure that sustainability is maintained.

However, landfills often pose a threat in these scenarios. So, does landfill monitoring technology mitigate this threat? Here, that will be looked into.

    Traditional Challenges in Landfill Management

As time passes, the world is producing more waste. As per World Bank data, the world produced 2.01 billion tons of waste in 2016, a figure that is expected to rise to 3.4 billion by 2050. And landfills contain a majority of that waste. Landfill sites currently have approx. 40% of the world’s waste. Therefore, a significant section of the population is affected.

From these amounts, it can be said that without a technology for measurement, the data pool can show inconsistencies. And, usually, landfills are measured using traditional surveys and manual sampling. While this data can be reliable at first, it leads to major inconsistencies over time.

Moreover, leachates and gas leaks are difficult to measure. The leachate composition of a landfill is often not easy to predict. Especially with manual landfill monitoring ,the early estimation of how leachates can affect the environment becomes extremely challenging.

Similarly, accounting for the composition of gas leaks is also difficult for traditional measurement systems. They can only detect a single gas, resulting in incorrect outputs.

    Challenges in Real-time Data Management

Traditional data gathering processes are also not suitable for real-time data collection. These processes are usually manual, and the data measurement takes time. And this is even more of a challenge in data computing regarding landfills.

Landfills usually have a complex composition of different waste materials, leading to emissions such as leachates and gas leaks. Without technological intervention, manual data tracking will struggle to identify the individual components.

Therefore, there is a failure in real-time data gathering and measurement. This is because of a major issue that these data management procedures cannot comprehend dynamic, over-time changes.

Why is a Transformation to Tech-Enabled Monitoring Required?

As observed in the previous sections, traditional landfill monitoring systems are ill-equipped for landfill data. That is the reason that a transition was required to tech-enabled monitoring. Here is how the latter improves upon the former:

    FactorsManual Landfill MonitoringLandfill Monitoring Technology
InstrumentsMostly dependent on human observation.Uses sensors and automatic data gathering systems.
AccuracyHuman error can be present.Offers precision and higher accuracy.
EfficiencyData collection can be limited and time-consuming. Accurate, saves time and costs.

Table: Manual vs. Tech-enabled Landfill Monitoring

Therefore, with a higher degree of accuracy and efficiency, landfill monitoring technology has been an appropriate measure in making waste management more sustainable.

Key Technologies That Led the Transformation

Landfill monitoring technologies that have led to the transformation of environmental project management are:

    • IoT Sensors: Adds real-time monitoring capability in terms of detection of methane levels, temperature fluctuations, and changes in the water level.
    • GPS and GIS Integration: A Geolocation system that accurately pinpoints the problem location in the vast landfill areas.
    • Drones: Thermal imaging to identify issues, as well as real-time aerial monitoring.
    • Remote Platforms: Centralized monitoring systems, including dashboards, which help manage multi-site monitoring.
    • AI and Predictive Analysis: Technology-managed early detection systems that can predict challenges, such as gas leak monitoring and management of leachate emissions.

    Benefits for Environmental Project Managers

So, having learned how technology has led to the transformation of environmental project management ,what are the exact benefits of landfill monitoring technology for environmental project managers?

Here are some of the key benefits:

    • It leads to faster reporting and tracking: Real-time detection and monitoring can lead to on-time reporting of leachates and gas leaks, such as methane and hydrogen sulfide. Therefore, the correct steps against any form of harmful impact of the landfills can be taken on time and reported to the right sources.
    • It leads to reduced environmental fines and violations: As harmful emissions can be detected on time, and the steps for recovery taken quickly.
Therefore, landfill monitoring technologies do not allow the condition to worsen enough to harm the sustainability of the surroundings. Thus, through these technologies, it is possible to avoid environmental violations and government-imposed fines.
    • It helps in ensuring resource efficiency: As more processes are automated, there is less need for human intervention. Thus, site visits can be minimized, avoiding spending resources on that activity often.

Moreover, with increased accuracy and efficiency, repetitive and time-consuming monitoring practices are not required. What does that imply? Time and costs, both crucial resources, are not spent excessively.

    Summing Up

Landfill monitoring technologies have been instrumental in ensuring that, with real-time data monitoring, consistency, and accuracy, the harmful impacts of landfills can be mitigated. Therefore, with technology adoption, environmental project management is significantly impacted.

    Managing an Environmental Project?

If you are managing a landfill or an environmental project, and you are worried about accurate measurements and reporting, here’s a solution. With different landfill monitoring technologies such as sensors, drones, GPS tracking, and predictive analysis, your ability to accurately monitor the landfill can improve significantly!
