6 Charming Small Cities to Visit on The Traveling Professor’s Small Group Tours

The Traveling Professor has explored Europe extensively on his small group tours to Austria, Germany, Italy, Scotland, France, Norway, and beyond. While famous capitals draw much of the attention, it’s often the smaller cities that leave the biggest impressions. Here are six of his favorite small European cities worth adding to your travel list.

    1. Salzburg, Austria

Whether in the glow of winter’s Christmas markets or during the sunny summer festival season, Salzburg always enchants. Birthplace of Mozart, home to “The Sound of Music,” and the origin of “Silent Night,” it’s a city rich in music and history. The Elefant Hotel offers charming lodging, and St. Peter is our top dining pick.

    2. Innsbruck, Austria

Nestled in the Alps with a river running through it, Innsbruck is a compact and picturesque mountain city. Guests on our small group tours to Austria love staying at Hotel Innsbruck and enjoying the lively Tyrolean Evening Show. It’s the perfect alpine retreat.

    3. Padua, Italy

Quieter and more affordable than nearby Venice, Padua is home to Galileo’s university, the stunning Scrovegni Chapel, and the Basilica of St. Anthony. We recommend Majestic Toscanelli for your stay as we always do on our small group tour to Italy.

    4. St. Andrews, Scotland

Famous for golf yet offering much more, St. Andrews boasts coastal beauty, cathedral ruins, and a prestigious university where Prince William met Kate Middleton. It’s also where “Chariots of Fire” was filmed along the seashore.

    5. Bayeux, France

On our Normandy tours, we often stay in the charming town of Bayeux at the Churchill Hotel. With great restaurants like Au P’tit Bistrot and Lion d’Or, it’s the perfect base for visiting the historic D-Day beaches while enjoying a peaceful atmosphere.

    6. Bergen, Norway

This colorful Hanseatic city at the end of a fjord is a highlight of our Norway tours. Wooden houses line the harbor, the fish market bustles with life, and the funicular ride to the top rewards travelers with sweeping views. We recommend the Grand Hotel Terminus and Bien Centro for a delightful stay and meal.

    Experience Europe Beyond the Capitals
From Alpine retreats to coastal gems, these small cities bring history, culture, and charm to life. The Traveling Professor’s small group tours are designed to immerse travelers in authentic local experiences while enjoying the ease of expert planning.
