Why the Supergirl movie will be entirely different from Superman

The Superman movie was a big hit for DC Studios in the summer of 2025, which is a great sign since it kick-started the new DC Cinematic Universe (DCU). While it is a direct competitor to Marvel, this is more of a focus on DC characters and a return to form rather than purely competition.

DC is revving up more projects, as they have Peacemaker Season 2 in August 2025, and the Lanterns TV show in early 2026. However, the biggest follow-up to Superman is the next movie in the DCU, which is Supergirl, releasing in theatres in late June 2026.

Supergirl is a ‘total mess’ compared to her cousin

Kara Zor-El is the titular Supergirl in the 2026 movie, and she will be a heroic character like her cousin Kal-El, better known as Clark Kent or Superman. This movie is set to have a different take on Kara, as it will tackle why she is not as well put together as her cousin. It will be exciting to watch it, like betting on Sportsbet io Ethereum markets.

Since Kara is the other Kryptonian left in the universe, she is not in the best headspace. Unlike her cousin, Kara knows about the collapse of the planet Krypton and plenty of people from it.

Supergirl is still a heroic figure, but she has more problems on the surface, which is why she takes space trips to get drunk on planets without a yellow sun to power her up. This new movie will take her across space and show why she endures.

Supergirl is a direct adaptation of a stellar story

This Supergirl movie in 2026 will be a direct adaptation of the comic book miniseries by Tom King and illustrated by Bilquis Evely called Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow. That was one of the best stories in modern comic book history, and for good reason, as it explores the challenges of being Kara.

It is one of the best explorations of grief, heroism, and kindness in modern-day comic books. Craig Gillespie is the film’s director, who is known for Cruella and I, Tonya. He has a great track record of telling compelling stories centred on women, and this will be one of the best ones due to the source material.

This will be more of a space adventure story compared to Superman, which was set on Earth. Rob Hardy is the film’s cinematographer, which is a promising sign due to his work on Alex Garland’s Civil War, Ex Machina, and Mission: Impossible – Fallout.

Milly Alcock has already captured people’s attention

At the end of Superman, there was a small but important cameo from Supergirl, who will be portrayed by Milly Alcock. From her House of the Dragon portrayal of Rhaenyra, Alcock has risen in the ranks of actors in Hollywood, as she became DC Studios head James Gunn’s preferred choice for the character.

In that short cameo, she perfectly portrayed what this Kara will be like in the DCU. That was more of a comedic spin on her character, but this Supergirl movie will be a great display of why Alcock was the right choice for the role. Gunn and DC Studios understand Supergirl will be a crucial part of the universe, and this movie is expected to get rave reviews in 2026.The wait will be a bit long since this film will be released in 2026.
