Everything We Know About the Next Star Wars Series

The galaxy far, far away continues to expand with an exciting new entry into the Star Wars saga. As Lucasfilm and Disney+ forge ahead with a growing slate of live-action series, fans are eager to know what’s next after the success of The Mandalorian, Andor, Ahsoka, and The Book of Boba Fett. The next installment in this sprawling universe has already sparked intense discussion and speculation among Star Wars enthusiasts.

In this article, we explore everything we currently know about the next Star Wars series: its creative vision, cast, story direction, production status, and what it could mean for the future of the franchise.

    1. A New Vision: The Series Title and Creative Leads

The next Star Wars series has been officially titled The Acolyte. Announced as a project that will diverge from the familiar timelines of the Skywalker saga, The Acolyte is set during the final days of the High Republic era, approximately 100 years before The Phantom Menace. This period, until now only explored in books, board betting, and comics, marks a golden age for the Jedi and the Galactic Republic. Helmed by showrunner Leslye Headland (Russian Doll), The Acolyte is expected to lean into the darker corners of the galaxy, introducing Sith lore and the gradual emergence of the dark side.

    1. Cast and Characters: Familiar Faces and Fresh Talent

The cast of The Acolyte is shaping up to be one of the most diverse and exciting in the Star Wars universe. Leading the series is Amandla Stenberg (The Hate U Give, Bodies Bodies Bodies), cast in a still-unnamed role believed to be central to the series’ mystery. Stenberg has described the experience as “a spiritual journey,” highlighting the reverence she brings to the role. Joining her is Lee Jung-jae, best known for his Emmy-winning performance in Squid Game.

    Additional cast members include:

    • Manny Jacinto (The Good Place) is reportedly playing a rogue-like character with possible ties to the underworld.
    • Dafne Keen (His Dark Materials, Logan), rumored to be portraying a Padawan or young Jedi.
    • Jodie Turner-Smith (Queen & Slim), whose role remains undisclosed but is believed to be involved in political or force-sensitive dynamics.
    • Carrie-Anne Moss (The Matrix), in a role that might pay homage to her iconic status in action and sci-fi.
    1. Plot Hints and Timeline: A Darker Chapter Begins

While official plot details are still scarce, The Acolyte promises a tone and setting that contrast starkly with earlier Star Wars series. Set in a time of relative peace, the show will examine the undercurrents of corruption and secrecy within the Jedi Order and the Galactic Republic. With a working premise of “an investigation into a shocking crime,” the series appears to mix the DNA of a noir thriller with that of epic space fantasy.

The High Republic era, still largely untouched in live-action, offers fertile ground for new stories. This is a time when the Jedi are at their most powerful, respected peacekeepers with little challenge to their authority. However, it’s also the time when the seeds of their downfall are quietly being sown.

In this context, the Acolyte is expected to explore:

    • The emergence of dark side ideologies, possibly through an apprentice or a fallen Jedi.
    • The complacency and flaws within the Jedi Order.
    • Political instability is brewing beneath the surface of a seemingly perfect Republic.
    • The first signs of Sith manipulation, potentially laying the groundwork for Palpatine’s rise.
    1. Production Status and Release Expectations

Filming for The Acolyte began in late 2022 in the UK and continued into 2023. Though production was affected by the 2023 WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes, most of the shooting had already wrapped or was able to resume shortly after negotiations were resolved.

As of early 2025, post-production work, including visual effects, editing, and musical scoring, is ongoing. The series is scheduled for release on Disney in late 2025, with a likely fall premiere date that aligns with past major Star Wars releases. The season will consist of eight episodes, making it a compact but story-rich narrative arc. While trailers and promotional materials have not yet been officially released, insiders suggest that a teaser may drop during Star Wars Celebration 2025, which is expected to take place earlier in the year.

    1. What It Means for the Star Wars Universe

With The Acolyte, Lucasfilm appears to be making a deliberate move away from the Skywalker timeline that has defined Star Wars since 1977. This represents a broader creative initiative: to diversify storytelling, introduce new characters and cultures, and explore themes that resonate with contemporary audiences. The success of Andor, which was praised for its mature tone and political depth, has given Lucasfilm the confidence to experiment.

The Acolyte is poised to follow that path, asking more complex questions about power, loyalty, faith, and rebellion. Moreover, this series could lay the groundwork for future High Republic-era projects, possibly forming the foundation for a new trilogy or interconnected shows.

    Conclusion

The Acolyte has the potential to become one of the most significant Star Wars series to date. With a compelling cast, a richly unexplored timeline, and a creative team unafraid to challenge conventions, it’s poised to expand the franchise in bold new directions. Whether you’re a diehard Jedi loyalist or a curious newcomer, this series promises to deliver a fresh perspective on the eternal battle between light and dark.
