Netflix Testing New OpenAI-Powered Search Feature

There is a lot of controversy surrounding AI-generated “art,” but what about AI that helps you find art? Streaming pioneer Netflix is testing out a new search feature that harnesses the power of AI to better suggest movies and shows. The company is partnering with OpenAI software to make this a reality.

This new feature will let users “look for shows using far more specific terms, including the subscriber’s mood, for example, the company said,” according to Bloomberg. Allowing users to make searches that “go well beyond genres or actors’ names.”

Netflix currently offers this as an opt-in feature to some iOS users in Australia and New Zealand.

While OpneAI hasn’t commented on this story, Netflix spokesperson MoMo Zhou confirmed to The Verge that this is happening. According to Zhou, the current test is set to expand to the US “in the coming weeks and months.”

However, there are no plans at the moment to offer this option outside of iOS. So non-Apple users won’t be able to access this capability. “It’s early days for the feature and we’re really in a learn and listen phase for this beta,” says Zhou.

We’ll keep you posted on updates about this emerging technology as they become available.
