    For international students aiming to study at top universities abroad, one of the biggest hurdles isn’t their grades—it’s the recognition of their high school diploma. Admission officers in Canada, the U.S., the U.K., and other competitive destinations often rely on specific academic benchmarks, and not all secondary school qualifications are considered equivalent. That’s where a dual diploma can make all the difference.

    One of the most efficient ways for students to strengthen their applications is by earning the Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) alongside their local credential. Ontario Virtual School offers a fully online Dual Diploma Program that allows students to do just that—without leaving their home country or interrupting their existing studies. It’s designed to be flexible, accessible, and aligned with the requirements of global university admissions.

    Double the Diploma, Double the Opportunity

    So what makes the OSSD so valuable? For starters, it’s widely recognized as one of the most robust and well-rounded secondary education systems in the world. An OSSD is assessed as comparable to upper secondary diplomas in various countries. For instance, the Swedish Council for Higher Education equates the OSSD to the Swedish Upper Secondary Diploma, granting access to higher education in Sweden.

    Why? Unlike exam-based programs that focus heavily on a single final test, the OSSD is credit-based. This means a student’s performance is evaluated across an entire course through assignments, quizzes, tests, and projects. Universities appreciate this holistic approach because it gives a more complete picture of a student’s abilities and work ethic.

    Another major advantage is the emphasis on critical thinking and independent learning. These aren’t just buzzwords—they’re built into the structure of OSSD courses. Students are encouraged to analyze, research, and present their ideas in ways that mirror post-secondary expectations. In fact, completing the OSSD often makes the transition to university smoother, since students are already familiar with managing deadlines, conducting research, and communicating effectively in English.

    Go Further, Sooner

    The dual diploma format works by allowing international students to take a select number of OSSD courses online while continuing to attend their regular high school. Typically, students complete six to eight Ontario courses—often in subjects like English, math, science, and social studies—to meet the diploma requirements. The flexibility of online learning means they can work at their own pace, fitting OSSD coursework around their existing schedule and commitments.

    It’s also a smart move strategically. With an OSSD in hand, students can apply to a broader range of universities, including those that may not fully recognize or rank their national high school credential as highly. For example, Canadian universities readily accept the OSSD and often provide faster or more streamlined admission decisions to students who hold one. Some universities in the U.S., U.K., Australia, and parts of Europe also favour applicants with a North American-style diploma, seeing it as a marker of academic readiness.

    A Strategic Boost for Students with Big Goals

    Beyond admissions, the dual diploma opens doors to scholarships and other financial aid opportunities that might not otherwise be available. Some institutions even offer automatic entrance scholarships to OSSD graduates based on their final grades.

    The online delivery format is another key strength. Course materials are available 24/7, and students can access video lessons, submit assignments, and receive feedback from certified Ontario teachers—all from anywhere in the world. It’s a modern solution that aligns with the way students learn today and offers a more personalized experience than many traditional classrooms.

    For families looking to invest in a student’s long-term academic future, the Dual Diploma Program is more than a credential—it’s a strategic pathway. It helps students build confidence, improve their academic English, and gain exposure to a Western educational framework—all of which give them a competitive edge in university applications.
