Top Must-Watch Movies for Aviation Enthusiasts

For sheer thrill and excitement, movies about airplanes and aviation are some of the best. When it comes to planes, there’s a lot to offer too. So for those who are looking for action, there’s plenty to choose from. But, this list is also home to some realistic depictions of aviation for the purists as well as historical aviation movies. Let’s fly right into it to see what are some top aviation movies out there.

    Flying into the Action

At the top of the list, when it comes to action at least, is Top Gun (1986) and Top Gun: Maverick (2022). Top Gun is an iconic 80s aviation movie impressing the world with a booming soundtrack, stunning real-life effects and action, and some exciting camaraderie between pilots. The movie is impressive because it really does capture the feeling of being a fighter pilot, throwing the viewer right into the action and tension of it all. It’s not everyone’s cup of tea though, as this is a high-octane, wild ride.

Similarly, Maverick the sequel, is also aimed at this fast-paced pilot lifestyle. It pays homage to the original and also features practical effects and real aerial combat sequences. It’s an exhilarating experience that also accurately shows the current aviation technology and challenges faced by pilots in the military.

    Historical heroes

If the bombastic action of the two Top Gun movies is a little much, then there are other movies offering the drama and tension, with a little less action. Combining heroism and history, Sully (2016), tells the story of the pilot, Chesley Sullenberger, or managed to do an emergency landing on the Hudson River. Subsequently, he became one of the most famous pilots in the world. All passengers and crew on board were saved with the movie showing how quick decisions can literally mean the difference between life and death. It also shows the skill required by real-life pilots.

For an even more historical look there is The Aviator (2004), the tale of Howard Hughes, one of the influential figures in early aviation. The movie is all about the early life of Hughes and his struggles and aviation innovations. As a key figure in the history and development of aviation, this is a great option for those looking to learn more about flight without excessive action.

    Planes at War

There are also other historical plane movies that manage to combine action at the same time. One, Memphis Belle (1990) takes place in World War II. It is the true story of the last bombing mission of a B-17 Bomber. It showcases the bravery of the pilots as they seek to succeed in their mission while flying above enemy territory. Furthermore, it’s got some really great historical detail and shows just how brave these soldiers were.

Along similar lines is the film, Pearl Harbor (2001). Set during the bombing of Pearl Harbor, this film takes the historical theme, but adds a little romance to the mix. Two pilots deal with personal turmoil and strife while also aiming to focus on the issue at hand. There are dramatic aerial sequences, a strong love triangle, and tons of emotion to boot. Its strong focus on the love aspect can be seen as a detraction from the main aviation focus though.

    Crash landing

For some of the more tragic sides, there are some movies aimed at when things go wrong. The Argentinian, Whisky Romeo Zulu (2004), is about a tragic real-life airline crash. It takes a deep, sometimes stark look into the corruption and negligent behavior found within the aviation industry. The movie focuses on a pilot’s fight against the systemic failures within the industry regarding flight safety. As a critical perspective on the industry, this is a must-see for anyone with an interest in aviation and how and when it can go wrong. For a film showing how important aviation safety is, this is the best.

But it’s not just movies that have been inspired by flying, games have too. Exciting crash games like Aviator use the thrill and excitement of flying (and the avoidance of crashing), to a new level. Instead of sitting back and watching, it’s possible to be part of the flying experience too. With the different types of aviation movies, and a growing selection of aviation-themed games, everyone will find something that meets their tastes. Take a look at the different movies listed here and settle in for a great aviation-fueled day.
