What is Rake in Poker and How Does it Affect Your Gameplay?

Everybody loves a good game of poker. However, not everyone understands the value or significance that the rake has on their game. So if you have been wondering about what a rake in poker is, then explore the sections below to understand more.

    What is a Poker Rake?

In simple terms, this term refers to the amount that the host of the game keeps for themselves to balance the costs of organizing the game. This amount also helps casino owners pay their staff members’ salaries, along with the casino’s maintenance costs.

When you play online rummy, then the rake amount is used to pay for the website’s server and maintenance costs.

In tournaments, about 28% GST is levied on the rake amount, as per the latest market rates. So you should make sure that the website you choose to play online Rummy or poker on is complying with the latest regulations.

This will ensure that you do not get penalized for playing the game on an unregulated website.

The rake is levied by the website every 30 minutes to one hour during the game, or at the beginning depending on the type of rake, as per poker rules. Now, you will have to pay between 5-10% of the website entry fee as the rake during tournaments.

On the other hand, you’ll have to pay about 7 to 10% of the website entry fee if you’re playing a casual game. However, if the game lasts for a shorter duration, then you shall have to pay about 5-8% of the website’s entry fee.

Let’s now explore the different variants of rakes in the sections below.

    Types of Rake in Poker

Continue reading to learn more about the different variants of rakes below.

    Pot Rake

In simple terms, the website collects this type of rake from the players after everyone has paid the entry amount. So if the total of the entry fees paid by the players is ‘x,’ for instance, then the pot rake amount that the website charges is ‘y%’ of ‘x.’

The website will collect this amount after the players have dealt the first three cards. You should know that the website has a cap on how much entry fees they can charge, so you won’t have to pay an exorbitant fee.

To know more about this cap limit, you should read up on the poker rules beforehand. For example, if the total website fees collected from all players is INR 5000, and the rake percentage collected is 5%, then you’ll be paying Rs. 250 as the rake.

However, in the case of tournaments, the rake is inclusive of the entry fee you pay.

    Time Collection or Hourly Rake

You will have to pay this rake to the website at a predetermined duration, as per the rules. For instance, you might have to pay a fee every half hour or every 1 hour. However, you will also have to pay an overall entry fee as well.

To know why, you have to think about what rake is in poker and how websites use the fee to maintain their servers and other associated factors. Generally, players who play low-stakes poker games prefer to choose timely or hourly rakes.

This is because the timely rake fee is less than the overall entry fee, which websites charge. However, in the case of high-stakes games like tournaments, players have to pay quite a significant entry fee. So it leads to unwanted financial losses.

    Dead Drop

As per existing poker rules, you have to pay this rake fee to the website for each hand of poker you play if you win it. The dead drop amount is usually quite substantial, financially speaking.

So, if you’re a high-stakes tournament player, then the rake amount you pay to the website will not be proportional to the total rake amount paid to the website. Hence, you’ll be paying a higher rake fee to the website if you are a low-stakes player.

    Tournament Entry Fees

The entry fee that you pay to the website will depend on the poker rules of the tournament in question. However, it is different from a rake fee, which is the website’s maintenance fee.

Now, we would recommend that you evaluate your financial position before you decide to sign up for a tournament. This is because a significant amount of entry or rake fee could affect your bank balance.

So, you should consider the type of poker game that you wish to play before you invest in the entry or rake fee.

Strategies to Minimize the Impact of Rake

You can reduce the financial impact of paying for the rake by doing the following:

    Opt for Lower-Stakes Games

Websites that organize low-stakes games often charge low rake percentages to attract a higher volume of players. Furthermore, as we mentioned previously, low-stakes games generally prefer to charge pot rakes, as this puts a cap on the amount charged.

This is why we would recommend that you choose lower-stakes games.

    Skip High Rake Games

In case you see that a poker tournament is charging a timed rake or dead drop rake fee from you, you should sit out or avoid that game. For instance, if you’re charged 10% or higher, then we would not recommend participating in that particular game.

How You Can Find Low-Stake Poker Games

You can find low-stakes poker games in the following ways:

    Compare Multiple Online Websites

When you compare various websites across various parameters, you end up saving quite a bit of money. This is because you can find all the association information about those sites and their various policies.

For example, you can find all the associated poker rules, the rake percentage, membership policies, and other associated information, etc.

    Skip Micro Stakes

This will not require intensive research on your part, since low-stakes games are often quite popular and are highly ranked.

Do Not Opt for Dead Drop games

This should be a no-brainer. As we mentioned previously, you have to pay a dead drop rake fee to the website for each hand of poker that you play. So, you should avoid games with dead drops to avoid a heavy financial burden.

    The Final Word

Hence, as you can see, you should keep an eye out for the poker rules for every tournament that you participate in. This is to ensure that you do not pay an excessive rake amount and put a strain on your financial resources.

Additionally, we would recommend that you avoid choosing high-stakes games or those with dead drops. Lastly, you should skip private tournaments since they have a different set of rules as compared to reputed online sources.

We hope you now know what a rake is in poker and will be able to pay the correct amount.
