The essential design elements healthcare websites need

Creating an effective healthcare website goes beyond just a slick-looking interface—it’s about functionality, meeting patient expectations, and trust-building.

After all, you’re dealing with people’s personal health, and your website is their first impression of your organisation. It’s your front door, inviting them inside to become a part of the family.

A Pew Research Center study revealed that 80% of adult internet users have searched for health information online.

The great news is that there are both practical and research-backed ways in which you can optimise your healthcare website for success.

What makes up a great health industry website?

There are six essential elements to a successfully designed healthcare website:

    1. Mobile-first design
    2. Cybersecurity
    3. Accessibility
    4. Engaging content
    5. Clean design
    6. User Experience (UX)

Let’s dive further into these essential elements that will help your site stand out while providing exceptional user experiences.

    Mobile-first design

If you’re like most people nowadays, you probably do the majority of your internet browsers over mobile. These mini computers in our pocket have become the most used device to access the internet now.

As a result, having a mobile-responsive website design is no longer an option, but a must. If a user accesses your website for health services on mobile and it doesn’t load properly or is formatted incorrectly, you’ve likely lost them.

Mobile-responsive design automatically adjusts your site for mobile. This ensures buttons and menus that are easy to tap on mobile screens and uses concise text, scaled-down images, and simplified forms for a smooth experience no matter the device

    Trust in data security

You’re handling people’s highly personal and sensitive data in healthcare, which makes data security of the utmost importance.
Start with encryption as standard by using HTTPS. This layer of protection keeps data safe as it’s transmitted.

Next, make sure your website has secure forms for booking appointments, processing payments, or submitting enquiries. These forms require bulletproof security measures to prevent hacks and maintain user confidence.

Lastly, always prioritise local regulatory compliance. In Australia, this means the Australian Privacy Principles (APPs). You also need a dedicated privacy policy page that is transparent about how user data is collected, stored, and used.

    Accessibility means designing for everyone

As essential services, healthcare websites need to be accessible to all. There are several ways in which to make your website more inclusive.

Your website can use semantic HTML and ARIA roles for screen reader compatibility to support visually impaired users.

On the back end, you add descriptive alt text to images and multimedia content, which can be read out for visually impaired readers. This can also benefit the SEO of your health website.

Finally, ensure all site features are functional without a mouse and use high-contrast colours for readability and visual clarity.

    Informative and engaging content

As they say in marketing, content is king. However, not all content is created equal. Aim for quality over quantity.

    Here’s some pointers:

    • Clarity: Make sure your web pages dedicated to a specific healthcare service explain it in clear, jargon-free language. Aim for a reading level of 8 – 12-year-olds (or Grade 6).
    • Blog: A blog section is a useful way to go into more depth and educate on any given topic. Blog posts can also target specific keywords to help you rank in Google, drive traffic and build authority for your website.
    • Interaction: Don’t be afraid to include interactive features such as symptom checkers, quizzes, or appointment schedulers to keep users engaged. These can also help users take action to book an appointment.
    • Mix it up: Some information might be better conveyed through videos or infographics so don’t be afraid to mix things up.
    • Social proof: Finally, include testimonials where possible to provide social proof by showing potential customers that others have had positive experiences with your health services.

    Visual appeal

A visually appealing healthcare website helps instill trust in the user. Consistent branding is key. Consider your colour schemes, logos, fonts, and the tone of voice you communicate in. It’s your healthcare organisation’s unique identity, and it needs to be consistent across all of your marketing materials, including your website.

Additionally, aim for a lot of whitespace, allowing your words and visuals to breathe. Organise content with clear sections and headings to guide users intuitively. This helps make the site look clean and inviting.

Ensure your photos are of high quality. Have a professional photographer take high-resolution photos of staff, facilities, and patient interactions to build trust.

    User-focused navigation

User experience (UX) has become an integral part of websites, and for good reason. Google now considers UX a determining factor when ranking websites.

Firstly, you need to make sure you site’s pages load fast. If a user is waiting too long for your website to load, they’ll likely move onto another site. There are actions a professional developer can take to improve your page load speed, and take a look at Google’s Page Speed Insights tool, such as optimising images and streamlining code.

Other determining factors for your UX include:

    • Intuitive menus: Simplify navigation with logical categories and dropdowns for more indepth information.
    • Search functionality: Add a search bar to help users quickly find the information they need.
    • Clear CTAs: Highlight buttons for key actions, such as booking appointments, contacting staff, or accessing patient portals.
    • Breadcrumb trails: these show users exactly where they are on your website and make it easy to return to previous pages with just a click.

    Designing for engagement and credibility

A successful healthcare website combines intuitive design, valuable content, and strong security to meet patient needs while building trust.

With a thoughtful approach, your site can become your ultimate marketing tool and a perfect reflection of your organisation’s professionalism and care.

    Three takeaways for success

    1. Prioritise mobile users: With more people browsing on smartphones, a mobile-first approach is critical.
    2. Security equals trust: Protect patient data with encryption, secure forms, and clear privacy policies.
    3. Accessibility enhances credibility: Inclusive design ensures your website is usable for everyone, showcasing your commitment to care.
